How do I decide what stem length I need.
I have a trek ex8 and on short sharp climbs my steering is all over the place,
I sit forward and hold bars nearer to the centre but still get some wandering
The current stem is 100mm .I've been told buy a cheapy and try then get a good
One .please tell me this isn't the only way

Well short of borrowing a stem yes of course it is - how else are you going to try it!?

Get a cheap stem on the classifieds, if you like it buy a nice one and flog the cheapy.

try shifting your weight forward on the saddle and leaning right forward to put more weight over the front end.

Basically, try and get as much weight over the front end as possible without the rear tyre loosing traction

also don't hold the bars closer to the centre, that'll give you less leverage over the steering and will allow the steering to wander more.
    Fancy a brew?
