Apologies if there is already a similar thread...I cant seem to work the search function properly :?

Basically as title says I want a decent winter jacket thats waterproof but also breathable....Ive got a packlite Rab which is cool for the odd rainstorm but suffers from the usual boil in the bag effect

Endura stealth keeps popping up as the one to get but read loads of reviews saying the quality is biff ?

Help please :)

  • I went to buy an endura mt500 from leisurelakes last week but they didnt have any left.

That would be my first choice.
  • This might sound stupid, but are you sure you need waterproof? There aren't really any waterproof fabrics that cope with a long hard slog up a climb. I would much rather go for some kind of soft-shell material, i.e gore windstopper, which is still highly water resistant, but gives you a load more breathability. Just a thought...

I posted a similar question the other day and I decided that the Endura Windchill softshell was the best choice.
So I ordered one from Life Cycles on the 10th Oct and I'm still waiting for it. :x And after one phone call and two emails, I've still not got any answer as to when I'm getting it!!

  • Gore Phantom Windstopper softshell. Not waterproof, but effectively is so long as you are working. Zip off sleeves with tight T-Shirt length ones on the gilet. Good reflectives and pockets. Excellent cool/cold weather kit.

really not sure now then lol.....

Doesnt have to be waterproof I guess as i have a full lightweight paclite but I i was kinda looking for an all in one jacket more than anything.....which i suppose doesnt really exisit

def needs to be windproof though.....?

will look at the gore phantom :)

i have the endura luminite jacket and i love it, its totaly waterproof, keeps you nice and warm and the under arm vents help when you start getting a bit to warm and need some air flow.

I have a North Face Apex Bionic which is pretty toasty, breathable and waterproof.

Although I'm a newbie so worth a try before buying.
  • What about one of these? It uses the new goretex active shell which is meant to be a breathable of Event but is as light as paclite.

  • I just recently bought the Gore Bike Wear Tool SO Jacket and am delighted with it. It is made from the Gore Windstopper fabric which is highly water resistant but not totally waterproof. Due to this it breathes more effectively then the equivilant Goretex Jacket. It will keep you dry in almost anything but the most torrential downpours. The fit is also excellent.

The windstopper fabric doesn't fold away as small as a Gortex Paclight fabric for times when the rain stops or you start to get too hot but overall i would recommend.

Now I have my new Endura Windchill jacket I'm very pleased with it and think its the perfect choice for biking. Not too warm, yet keeps the wind and chill out, very breathable and still waterproof enough. I only wear a thin base layer under it and so far I'm very pleased with my choice and can see why What Mountain Bike magazine have it as no.1 in their softshell list.
