Adapt to the terrain, rather than accommodate to it.
Hills become easier, mainly because you begin to finish them quicker as you become fitter, thus less suffering. its difficult to compare road cycling to MTB, with techniques and energy conservation etc.
Although i am 20 years old and do weight 56Kg, so the way i feel in a climb could be fairly different.
Also, my race bike is a Cervelo S1, no problems with climbing on it for me.
Another thing to mention, if you are going to run larger gears, your rear mech will only cope upto a 28T, if you still are struggling, you can put a long cage rear mech on and a MTB cassette e.g. 11-32 to make things a little easier.
BTW, i run 53/11 up front and a 11-21 out back.
Happy hill climbingGive me a hill, then i shall enjoy the suffering!

For base training, big ring the rest of the time
I think I'd need an 11t on the front if the back only went to 21Saracen Tenet 3 - 2015 - Dead - Replaced with a Hack Frame

Happy hill climbing
With a 53/11 up front and only 56Kg it's no surprise that you enjoy the hills - betcha spin out quickly on that 11 front -21 back combination!0 -

Purchased a 2nd hand Cervello S1 with Shimano 105
Lovely bike, but I am struggling to climb the steep hills
The Front has a 53/39 on and the cassette is a 12-25
What do i need to change to make climbing easier?
Thanks
Phil
The difference between my climbing ability on my Cervelo Soloist (S1) and my Chinese Carbon is marginal. Both are better than my ability can deliver and both have 12-25 on the back with std crank. It's not about the bike0
