Carnacs were considered the best in the early 90s until Sidi and other Italian brands took over. Not the lightest but good quality materials and construction means they do last a while. I'm still using a pair of Quartz for turbo use. FWIW the ebay price is quite high for a 10 year old shoe.
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..

Maybe they are a bit overpriced, but think of the money he will save on batteries, as lights will not be needed.

With the right bike/kit they could look the biz. Leather as well, what's not to like? Get'em.
  • Just my size, so snap 'em up quick!

Both pairs are the same price, so why would anyone get the toned-down option???? At £65 I'm not quite sold - the orange colour is gonna clash with my fluoro pink shades. Buy them before I change my mind!

FWIW its worth checking that they come with shoe plate inserts as they are increasingly harder to get hold of.

Carnacs have been super-long lasting shoes for me. Last pair I used for, initially some races then mainly as commuter-wear and winter training shoes, must have done 30,000+ miles for me, eventually the upper started comign to bits but I got more than my money's worth for sure.
Current ones are not quite so comfy but still see them lasting another 5 years probably.
Those ones in the OP's link are a little dear for older shoes but new shoes are likely not 'better' as such, just lighter, and the Carnac's would give many miles or wear.

Good stuff, price seems to be an issue though so I may send the guy a message and chance my arm with a lower price!!

Oh and your link is beyond even my ostentatious needs!!

Jeez, I think I'm going to put my old Carnacs on eBay at those prices. Mine make those examples look positively bland too
  • I remember these when they were cool, and as MontyDog says, Carnacs were for many one of the brands, if not the brand, of cycling shoes to have. I liked this particular shoe back in the early nineties and I still like the look of it now. But what does it matter what anyone else thinks - if you like them, get them!

I'm still using a fairly 'loud' pair of Carnacs from the mid 90s and , although they've only ever been a fairweather shoe, they've held up really well and are still in good condition. Money well spent. If I recall, my pair are made of (amongst other things) Kangaroo leather! Or have I gone mad and imagined that? Anyway, don't know why this might be better than leather from cows, but it makes me chuckle and like them even more.

Oh yes, these use the UCS inserts (universal cleat system - far from universal, as you need a different UCS insert for each type of cleat design/fixing), so make sure before you buy that they come with the right insert for your type of pedal cleat.
  • D'oh! Somehow managed to miss the fact that at least 2 other posters had flagged up the UCS insert issue - sorry!

Since they've come up in discussion though, does anyone know where you can buy replacement inserts? I'm going to need some at some point soon, as I'm still using some really old Time pedals, but when these finally wear out, I'll need new inserts (as I don't think Time or any other cleats use the same bolt pattern these days).

Hope the OP doesn't mind me hijacking the thread for a moment. Thanks.

Not sure about the UCS inserts - I did a quick google and a link to JE James showed them not in stock - not sure if the current Carnac shoes now use a different system ?
Not many others seemed to come up, possibly something worth contacting a few of their stockists to see if that have what you need.
Kangaroo leather - yes, think as these beasts spend a lot of time kicking each other to bits their hide is particularly strong.
