Anything better than Endomondo?

I'm currently using Endomondo for tracking my rides and it works great for data recording, where it does fall down however is when you try to 'Beat Yourself' against a previous workout. It works out whether you are up or down based on average speed rather than looking at like for like points against the previous. What this means is that if the first mile of the workout is uphill and the average speed over the entire route is 17mph, whenever you try the route again you are immediately behind the clock as you don't average 17mph over that first mile ! You spend the rest of the workout catching up and it's not until right at the end if you know if you are actually going faster.

Does anyone know of an android based app that will let you compare your current performance to a previous one based on like for like points ie it looks at how quick you did the first mile this time, compares it to the previous workout and gives you a voice prompt of how far ahead/behind you are

Thanks

And there is an Android app too. Unfortunately you'll find that you'll be comparing yourself against others on key segments of your ride, like Box Hill, and find out how fit/fast you really are.

Tried Strava on the way home tonight - the free version is very basic and it didn't give me any voice prompts at the mile markers etc Do I need to go premium to get this functionality ?

Also does it give comparisons to others on the fly whilst out riding or is it only when you upload you can see how you you compare

    Thanks

I've been using MapMyRide as I found it easier to upload existing route maps than in Endomondo. It also enabled me to select a route to complete so I could compare times.

I'm going back towards Endomondo though as MayMyRide is pretty slow and doesn't seem to save my data all the time.

Can you create maps in Strava to base routes on and can they be accessed easily to re-use though my phone?
  • Maverick is pretty good come with an assortment of map layers

Thanks for the suggestions guys but it's not the mapping bit that I'm really interested in (Endomondo does that fine) What I'm after is more of a training aid, that will let me know how I'm doing against a base time whilst I'm riding eg at the 3 mile point I'll get a voice prompt to tell me how many seconds I'm ahead or behind the base time.

Endomondo Pro, does what you require

Yes - just fork out for the pro version - what is it - 3 quid - does what you need
  • I don't think endomondo pro fixes the problem with the program tracking you against the average speed, rather than against elapsed time at this distance in a previous ride, does it?

I have endomondo pro but never have it out during the ride so difficult to tell exactly what's going on.

Spot on Davenice, my whole problem with Endomondo basic and Pro is how it measures you against a previous ride.

I've been having a look round the android marketplace and think Cardio Trainer + the Racing for Cardio Trainer bolt on will do what I want. The web interface isn't great and the stats aren't organised as well as Endomondo but as said before it's what the app is like out on the road that is my main priority. I'll give it a go over the next few days and will feedback here.

    Cheers

  • I used this app too(free version) and thought it was good until i bought a new cycle computor and used em both on a ride and found the two gave different readings the App said id cycled 22.7 miles the cycle computor said id done 24.1 miles mmmm but which is more accurate.

Are you talking about Endomondo or Cardio Trainer

Endomondo and my computer normally tally pretty closely eg on a 15 mile trip they are normally within a tenth of each other

How does your cycle computer calculate the distance - a sensor on the wheel or using GPS? If it uses a sensor on the wheel then you might not have setup the computer for the correct wheel size. Apps that use your phone's GPS are generally pretty accurate when calculating the distance travelled.

It uses a magnet on the wheel and the app uses GPS i was just intrigued as to the mile or so difference, would loss of GPS account for this? I tried em again saturday but when i stopped for a drink and looked at my phone it said signal lost hey ho nevermind
