Hi there,

Total newbie really looking to get into mountain biking. Im probably one of many looking at a sub £500 bike to start. Mostly for commuting, easy trails, light off-road etc.

I've done a fair bit of research and everything seems to be pointing to the Decathlon Rockrider 8.1, Carrera Fury, or Specialised Hardrock Pro Disc (stocks of which seem to be getting thin on the ground).

However cannot see where anyone has commented on the Pinnacle Jarrah Two.

Seems to have decent spec (not besides the excellent stealth-like matt black coat!), plus there is a new Evans round the corner and of course I get to try before I buy (which seems to be the given), and it makes service etc easy also. It is also currently reduced to £349.

Any comments welcome...?

Any other alternatives in the £350 - £500 price bracket?

  • How about this:

    The genesis core 10' 2011

A great bike for the price, only downside is I have yet to find out how heavy it actually is, I don't think it's going to be light though, I even thought about getting one of these myself, because they're great bikes.

You save £200 which is a bargain in itself too.
  • I have infact just found the weight of the bike and it is around about 28lbs, so it's not that bad, weight wise.
  • This Sunn season (All Mountain) is also great value...

That Genesis Core looks the dogs for that price! Great frame and amazing specs. I quite like the fact that they seem slightly exclusive and apparently you don't see many around.

Tried Evans online price match and they won't match price with that shop for some reason...

    Would they in-store?
  • I don't know if they would, if I were you I would just go ask them if they would or not. How come they won't price-match online? And by the way if your thinking about getting the genesis I would buy it quite soon, because stock at this rate will go quick (less than 2 months).
  • Yes I'll try in-store.

Apparently Cycle Gear, or UKbikesdepot as they are also called, are not a recognised competitor to Evans. Surprised by this given they are a proper LBS (100 years old), plus they supply bikes to the police.
  • Stupid evans, always have to ruin it.
