In the interim between now and when it gets proper cold what do you lot wear? i have thermal bib's but they are to hot for anything higher that about 10 degrees, at the moment im still wearing 3/4 baggys and a pair of bib shorts, but im thinking the bottoms of my legs will be getting colder sooner or later.

whats worth buying? a thicker pair of 3/4 baggs and stick with the bib shorts underneath, leg warmers (mmm not sure about them!) or 3/4 lycra shorts/bibs

    Help I'm Being Oppressed
  • I'm lucky enough to have both, so my choice is determined by the weather forecast. Generally it's normal shorts with knee warmers, as on my morning commute it's pretty cold to start off now, but significantly warmer on the way home. Did a ride this Saturday afternoon with shorts and knee warmers in my pocket. Just as well - over 4 hours the temperature dropped from 19C to 9C, and I really feel the cold when I get tired.

Does this help? Probably not - sorry. Maybe get both, knee lengths are good because they don't slip or need adjusting, but knee warmers are great because of the flexibility they give you. Knee warmers shouldn't be that costly...
  • I always wear something over my lycra, so im thinking if a thicker pair of 3/4 baggys would just do the same as a set of knee warmers? :D

Im in the same boat, colder in the morning when i leave at about 7am then warmer when i leave at around 5pm, but no idea how long that will last!

For when the temperature is 10-12 degrees
long sleeved base layer and short sleeved summer jersey.
    ¾ tights.
    summer socks.
track mitts but with gloveliners underneath.

For when the temperature is 7-9 degrees
long sleeved base layer and long sleeved autumn jersey.
    ¾ tights.
    Autumn socks.
track mitts but with gloveliners underneath.

For when the temperature is 4-6 degrees
long sleeved base layer and long sleeved slightly thicker autumn jersey
    ¾ tights
    Autumn socks.
    winter gloves without silk liners

For when the temperature is 0-3 degrees
long sleeved base layer and long sleeved winter jersey.
    Full length bibtights.
    Winter socks with over socks
    Winter gloves with liner

For when the temperature is below zero -
long sleeved base layer and long sleeved winter jersey AND Gilet
    Full length bibtights.
Sock liners and winter socks with over socks
    Winter gloves with liner.

I always carry a windstopper/showerproof jacket and overshoes. They both roll up
small enough to go in the jersey pockets along with cap, smartphone, wallet,
    pager and keys.
By the way, there's no such thing as a breatheable cycling jacket.
    Layers are the key.

Current kit for any of the above temperatures is,
    Biemme 3/4 tights,
    Assos full length tights ,
    Defeet socks and defeet oversocks.
    Castelli Rain jacket ( windstopper/showerproof ) ,
    Mitts
    Chiba gloves ,
    Rapha base layers,
    Sportful jerseys.
    Bike GoreWear glove liners.
Assos cap in case it rains ( keeps rain off the glasses ).
and when it rains, my old faithfiul Eager overshoes.
