Complain to British Cycling; the NEG was formed by British Cycling and British Triathlon to provide safety for cycling events.

    This is probably the event:

    http://hogginthebridge.co.uk/

To be honest - possibility 3 to 4 thousand big motorbikes, as stated on the website, I would have just taken the given safety advice and ridden the cycle path or asked for more information regarding numbers of participants, optional routes and so forth.

a few thousand geriatrics/Sunday riders on Harley Davidsons = dangerous road.

I think your being a bit precious, IMHO.

Hey TRM - hope all is good mate.

I would have thought that they'd have been cycle friendly seeing as they marshall many cycling events too.

I've always thought that they do a great job, although I have wondered if they are wannabe Police Bike riders that haven;t made the grade

    http://www.britishcycling.org.uk/road/article/roadst-National-Escort-Group

"The National Escort Group was formed to provide an accredited group of motorcyclists trained to assist with the safety of events held on the public highway."

Epic fail on this occasion. If you've got witnesses about his manner of driving etc., I'd write into British Cycling with some statements of the event.

I can't seem to get this URL link working, copy and paste should work.

  • I don't understand. Was the National Escort Group marshalling your Sportive? - if so you should probably do as directed. Or, were they simply motorcylists partaking in their own event (off duty as National Escort Group representatives) in which case I don't see that they have any rights to tell you what to do, unless perhaps the road had been formally closed to non-participants. Not sure an event with a large number of participants (motorcyclists, cyclists, or pedestrians) should be allowed if their presence on public roads likely to endanger other legitimate road users.

Edit - re-reading your post it sounds like he was not involved with your sportive and therefore was effectively 'off-duty'.

Not a great idea having 2 events potentially clashing though. If it had been agreed that cyclists should be on the cyclepath, then you should have been informed on departure and by official marshalls. Possibly these guys had been asked to marshal both events? Telling you he was the Chairman is irrelevant and served only to feed his sense of self importance.

    Let me get this straight:

You were asked (your words) to use an alternate route by someone and you chose to completely ignore his request; despite him telling you that there was a motorcycle event taking place.

So rather than be courteous and do so, you rode past him and used the road he was trying to keep clear.

Okay, so it was your right to do so, but I don't think you were right to. (>3000 motorbikes potentially coming your way)

For me, that puts you firmly in the wrong.

Then we get onto his actions:

Driving down the road, straddling the white lines while hurling abuse as a bunch of vulnerable road users. It would've taken only a small incident with the oncoming traffic to cause a tragic accident.

For me that puts him firmly in the wrong.

So, basically: everyone involved in this tale needs to get a grip.

(I can imagine what happened after you all blithely cycled along the road he was trying to keep clear. I can picture him losing his temper over a bunch of arrogant bloody cyclists who can't even follow a simple request to use a perfectly viable cycle path that's been built just for them and I bet they all jump red lights and don't pay road tax and think that the rules of the road apply to someone else and my God look at them riding side by side down the road bloody blocking it the arrogant tossers)

    Get the hint?
