Yep, saw this on the news this morning.. tragic.

At least he went out doing what he loved.. not many people get that privilege.

    RIP.
  • Saw that last night, nasty stuff, man things happen quickly wheel to wheel at 220MPH
Taking the amount of cars in the incident [15] it's a miracle no one else was killed

    RIP Dan Wheldon

Maybe the Yanks will start using decent run-off areas instead of wall (but I doubt it)

Ovals and run off are kind of mutually exclusive.

Terrible news for his family and friends but I had never heard of him. Minority sport with poor driving standards from what I read - explains why a fat and bored Mansell still managed to cream the lot of them in his rookie season back in the 90s.

The standard of driving goes some way to explain the number of horrifc crashes I suppose.

I'd never heard of him and my interest in Indycar (or whatever it is) was slightly less than zero.

After being shown the crash, I looked at how they build an indycar... My god, it looks like some hick saw a picture of a formula one car sometime in the early 80s and decided to make a copy of it using old bits of wooden crates and rusty tractors.

Was never into Indycar or any oval circuit stuff as it's tediously boring. I know some argue F1 is as well, but just foot down, arms in almost the same position, round and round and round. What is the appeal?

Though the appeal to the yanks is to see a massive crash.

Maybe they'll think about their crazy lack of safety, but probably not. They did at least manage to slap a bit of rubber around the concrete walls though. Just perfect enough to make the cars bounce off the wall and smash into the others.

Anyway, RIP Dan Wheldon indeed. Hadn't heard of him, but read that he'd been tipped for a switch to F1 and could have been great.

    Horrific crash!

He was already 33 and still racing in the equivalent of Scottish football. I think F1 was likely beyond him. No doubt he was very talented though.

I wonder if anything will come of the outcry about safety - stupidly small track and far too many cars seem to be the problem. Then again the drivers make the choice at the end of the day to get on the track.
