looking to get a ss for my commute but dont know where to start with regards to gearing so over to the experts
the bike i am looking at comes with 46t - 18t,.
46t -18t is the equivalent to what on a 50 compact
,
got a 11/26 cassette on bike and usually do the lumpy bits in 50-21/23(slowly)
cheers

Normally 46/18 would be considered a very good starting point but it sounds as if it might be a bit low for you. Judging by what you say it won't be too high; you might find that it is actually a very good compromise. Otherwise you might find yourself changing the 46 ring for a 48 or 49 after a few months experience. Is your commute very lumpy? Will you want to do anything more adventurous with this bike?0

thanks for that advice,
theres a couple of 5min grinds over the slightly undulating 19miles to work,so i think i should manage the lumps, even if i do end up sucking the front wheel on times.
cant see me doing anything much more adventurous than going to work,as i live in a hilly area, except if i head to work,so maybe see how far i can get up some of the local climbs that i usually ride in a 34/23 :roll:now sharing my plods on

46/18 near enough same ratio as 50/20 or 34/13 on a compact.0
