Has anybody used one of these and if so how do they perform?

I've got one, taking it for it's first long ride tomorrow. Checked it on the turbo and HR and cadence worked great. Shame it only does speed OR cadence not both like a garmin but speed and distance don't bother me on the turbo.
Looks like the route guidance works ok too, not as good as the Edge 800 but better than nothing and still cheaper than the 500. I'll update tomorrow afternoon 8)

It can do speed and cadence using sensors - but Bryton only do sensors that pick up one parameter. However, you can use the Garmin sensors that can pick up both cadence and speed in one unit with the Bryton. Or fit two Bryton sensors though that would look clunky!

The unit is pretty good and much classier looking than a 500. The navigation is the sticking point at the moment as it seems to stop after about 10-15 miles and Bryton haven't indicated when this will be fixed.

I'd say it is probably rather better than a Garmin 200 and not quite as good as a Garmin 500 (though that only if the route finding is important).

I've been using a Bryton 30 and 35 since about May - for a few thousand miles. It was pretty glitchy to start with but the problems have (aside from the aforementioned) generally been slowly knocked off one by one.

Well, took it out this morning and I'm impressed, speed didn't jump around cadence and HR worked perfectly and uploaded my ride at home without a hitch. Will test the mapping in the week, fancy a couple of commutes before it gets dark.

Thanks guys, the information is really useful. Any chance you could let us know how you get on with the mapping Prawny.

I'm thinking I might get one of these rather than a Garmin 500.

Change of plan I was too slack!

I'll have another go on thursday.

It's a 20 mile commute so hopefully will be a good test. Long enough but I've ridden the same route 100s of times.

There is a check without doing the ride - look at the breadcrumb trail from home - you'll find that (assuming the commute isn't a featureless straight line) that you can see about 10 miles of it - the display will gradually increase in scale as you ride the route always showing the whole of the active route rather than a small part of it. Being able to see too much of the route before you start is a giveaway (obviously, you only want to see enough of it to navigate by).

So what's the verdict on these then? I see you can get it for about £160 now with HR and cadence bits and am tempted.

Mine went back and I bought a garmin edge 800.

Lots of faffing later I didn't get the bryton to work how I wanted it to, the garmin did pretty much out of the box.

Lots more money though, but it was worth it for me.

The navigation is now sorted and works rather well. Bryton are slow to sort things but they keep at it and make it work.

I'm still hoping to persuade them to use slightly larger scales for the display but for 99% of the time I prefer a smaller, neater non fully mapped unit.

They've now brought out the Bryton 40 which is pretty similar to the 35 but with extra training routines and a notably smaller, neater case (same size screen though) which is rather nicer than the Garmin 500 IMO.

Next is going to be their 800 rival - it will be a tough act to match.

Merlin Cycles have currently got a sale on, you can get the Bryton Rider 35T (includes HRM and cadence) for £143.95.
I'm not sure what the previous posts mean by you can't see speed and cadence at the same time, the bryton web site implies you can?
Wouldn't you use the speed from GPS and cadence from the sensor and then you'd have both?

I think Prawny meant that the sensor is a single action one only - so if you are on a turbo, to get both speed and cadence you'd need to get another sensor (the neat solution being to get the Garmin combined speed and cadence unit which works on the Bryton).

The screens can be configured in any way you like with up to six parameters per screen and up to three screens for the basic metering mode.

Cheers wyattlas, that's cheaper than I've found it anywhere else

Yeah, it's only an issue on the turbo. Worked fine on the open road. To be fair in the end it was only the routing that made me send mine back, if they've sorted that out £144 is a bargain.

I see the Bryton 40 is available for £145.99 (GOS/Cadence/HR). It says in the details that it can be used on Turbos as well.
    http://www.totalcycling.com/a-z/compute ... ER_40.html

For nearly £200 cheaper that the Garmin 800

They also have the Byton 50 out now - about £180 - that seems to be very good? Anyone tried this out?
  • Had one of these for a couple of weeks. Can someone help me out.

I prepare a training plan and download it but the thing doesn't work on the unit. When I run the plan it just cycles through laps until it locks at 30.

Can individual plans be deleted from the unit or do I have to wipe the whole thing.

The basic unit works fine but these extras it should do just don't work.
