Seriously, this is no less complicated or bureaucratic than the previous/current system.

The £20billion pound savings (by 2015) were being touted in Gordon Brown's day.

£20billion in the context of each Trust would mean 4% efficiency savings each year. When I joined an NHS Trust in 2006 it had to (as did all other NHS Trusts) make 3% savings each year. So it wasn't an unknown in fact to the wider public it was simply a known unknown.

While I think the NHS has and still has to evolve to meet the changing needs of society, (it has by moving away from Hospital care to community care, shifting the focus from treatment to recovery) much of this NHS Bill is unnecessary.

Discuss.

What is the primary benefit of separating the Hospitals etc... from the GPs etc... ?

Good question. I'm no expert (yet) but at a glance I'd say to make sure that funding for GP and specialist care isn't affected by spending/over spending of Hospital/community services. It's likely that GP and specialist service funding is either pigeon holed, sourced from a different pot or both (thus they get funded directly by the proposed National Board and Hospitals would have to go through Commissioners. I.e. Bid.

In fact what it means is that GPs and Specialist services will likely have that funding guaranteed so they don't have to bid (via commissioners) or compete with private services like Hospitals/NHS trusts will have to.

I could be wrong and I don't necessarily think that's a bad thing.

A beautiful and wonderful institution, f*cked by bureaucracy and politics....

Less high end management and more nurses/patient care.....

I believe that even Sir Chris Gent was on an NHS steering commity - a bloke that left Vodafone in the red by some billion figure.

Ok next question, what is the main driver of this proposed change?

Are you looking for a flippant answer?

So people who earn a fair bit can get 'world leading' treatment.

Well it would be interesting to get the opinion of NHS Middle management on this. Because musical chair exercises are an end in themselves for bureaucrats whose bread and butter is process management.
  • There are more managers than beds in the NHS.

GPs never asked for it, as far as I know but they will make a lot of cash if they push this through.

Great that you never get a manager when you want one. They'll be at home by now, anyway.

If you made managers truly responsible (rather than blaming the nurses and doctors) you might see some change.

Keep the politicians out as well. Then we could actually plan.

    Sorry to bore you, TailWindHome.

The old "waste" and "savings" canards. Gotta go with David Mitchell & The Economist on this. When those words come up, the rest is usually complete bollocks.
