Puking whilst cycling

I had my first experience of this, this morning during some very dirty base miles, been off the bike for many weeks and suffered a bit more than I anticipated! Headache, cramps, coughing my guts up (still smoke) and eventually vomiting. That said though, it had to be done and sure as hell beats being a pussy. Overall I enjoyed the ride and feel good for it, if a little drained.

Who else here has had this privilege? :P

  • Not from cycling, but during a lacrosse game in high school I managed to fill my helmet with barf from running too long on an empty stomach. Was not nice.
  • Never quite puked but have been very close on many occasions. Gagging while riding isn't fun
  • ended up puking in my girlfriends parents flowerbed once after a partically enthusiastic ride over.
I mangaged to pull myself together before anyone answered the door though, and they never did discover the root of the 'unpleasent smell' 8)

(it went as soon as it next rained)
  • Was particularly depressing when, in tithe HQ after a TT a mate said that after the turn on a 25 miler TT he stopped to throw up. Still beat me for four minutes.

I lost an espresso all over my top tube on a short sharp climb 5 minutes out of the villa in Tuscany.

I've done it once on a clubrun (major hangover, steep climb - nobody wanted to ride near me the rest of the ride  ) and once at the end of a hill climb which was a 4 minute flat out effort. I've had plenty of near misses, mainly when eating to close to going out on the bike.

Then there's the story about Lemond and food poisoning but that's got different end ;-)

At the end of a particulary hard 10TT, just as I crossed the finish line and hit MHR and got a PB

Regularly in intervals, If you haven't blown chunks you're not trying hard enough
  • I think I'm right in remembering that the late great Beryl Burton (British time-trialling legend of yesteryear) used to puke up rather a lot. If you don't puke you haven't tried hard enough!

Only done it once myself, all down the outside of a stranger's car as they gave me a lift back to HQ after a 12 hour time trial. They'd found me laid out by the side of the road unable to stand and barely able to mumble let alone talk. I had the next 2 days off the bike and the next day did a PB for a 10 mile TT so it must have done me some good!
  • Never managed to throw up (I mustn't be trying hard enough.) However, after finishing an evening 10 on the Rainford bypass, I came to a halt, fell off my bike, and landed in a pile of dog sh@t. The ride back to the HQ wasn't very pleasant.

I puked on a Sunday club run from Cardiff to Penderyn and back. I didn't actually make it home that day but got as far as Taffs Well.

A mate got me to hospital by car and by that time I didn't know my name or date of birth. After a CT scan, lumbar puncture (for suspected meningitis) and drips, they said possible heat exhaustion/possible unknown virus. In hospital for 3 days.

It didn't go down well when the doc pointed to Mrs Benno and asked if I knew who she was ...I didn't - oops.

Yep, I hate that section after you turn left at the final roundabout into Bickerstaff. You just seem to be getting slower every pedal rev. I got passed by Ian Bibby earlier in the year on that final bit. He went past me like I was going backwards and he had the cheek (class) to pat me on my bum. He went sub-20

What a coincidence. I was just telling a friend about how I had just stopped smoking and went for a ride with a couple of mates on a very cold Bavarian winter's day. Got to the first hill, started coughing and puked up a load of carb drink all over the handlebars. Within ten minutes I had frozen, yellow gunk all over my bike computer. Had to defrost it at home to get it off.

I took part in Rollapalluza's Swain's lane Hill Climb.

2.15 and I was desperately close to puking. Bile in mouth job.

Headache and cramps before vomitting could suggest dehydration?

The only times I've been sick out riding were a couple of times over this winter where I managed to get dehydrated (I find it hard to drink when it's really cold etc.). Massive stomach cramps and then being sick (or even dry heaving)

Maybe it is the cause of your issues? If so, there's only one answer - drink more!
