SLX or XT double with bash guard + XT front mech.

Hollowtech II BB should arrive with them unless stated otherwise.

    Cheers. :)

Chain Reaction have got SLX double & bash crank sets for just under £90 including bottom bracket (just got one myself & it's great). SLX front mech will do the job of shifting up front.
  • Do you have a link to these? Cant seem to find it on chain reaction :(

    SLX chainset http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Mode ... elID=28019

    SLX front mech http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Mode ... elID=28029

    XT front mech http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Mode ... elID=20684

note that there is insignificant difference in price, so I would go with XT mech.

    Cheers.

what forks you thinking of for it ?
  • I've got a set of RS reba races that are on my hardtail. Was just gona put them on for the time being, may pickup a set of revelations at a later date.

Cheers for the links 386k, definitely better with the xt front mech than the double slx?
  • Will the hollowtech bb work ok with my frame?

Just double checking before I order anything.

    Cheers

    Yep will be fine.

I take it its the frame with the right angle support at the seat tube? if so I had one of these and they are ok to run with a 120mm fork as advised from Giant UK.

That's the same type of frame as mine which is a 2010 model x4. I'm running a 140mm RS Revs fork with no issues.

I don't think I got you right? The mech's are the same, except for the class as I can see...

    PS, you're getting a great frame :)

  • Yeah pretty sure its a 2008, well thats according to the bike archive on the giant site anyway. :)

Sorry 386ka, what I meant was is the XT front mech for a triple ring setup better than the SLX front mech for a double ring setup. Bearing in mind that I will only be running a double ring setup.

Dont actually know if thats explained it any better  Hopefully you get the jist of what I mean.

If you go with double 22-36 chainrings (2x9) get the SLX double specific mech it is designed to shift 14 teeth ie from a 22 inner to a 36 middle, the cage is a different shape/size and provides better chain clearance than a triple.

A triple can be bodged to work but you will always get better results using a double specific front mech with double chainrings.
  • Hopefully this isn't too much of a silly question, but what crank length is best 170mm or 175mm? I was just about to order them when I seen there are different crank lengths.... not sure how much of a difference 5mm makes tho?

Most MTB are 175mm, 5mm pedals further away from the ground, 5mm seat lower.

Go with what you are used.

On the lowest point, the pedals will be 5 mm closer to the ground than before.

    @Johnny Chimpo,
I've got you now. And it is good that you went for the double ring specific front mech. :)

    Cheers,
let your parts be with you, soon.
