Hi guys,

I purchased a hybrid bike around 6 months ago.

Now the shop owner said to bring it back about 1 month after, for a retune.

I did this, but the guy said i hadnt loosened the gear cable enough i.e. they hadnt bedded in yet, and to bring it back again in another couple months.

Now i havent got round to it, and was going to take it back this week. Is there anything that i can do myself (any utube videos out there) or should i take it back to the shop?

cheers for any advice

If the gears are still changing cleanly, nothing needs doing.

If it's hesitating when shifting onto bigger gears, the cable has stretched (or the outers have bedded in), and it needs adjusting. You need to turn a barrel adjuster a little bit anti-clockwise, until it shifts cleanly again. Same principle applies to both front and rear derailleur.

There will be a barrel adjuster on the rear derailleur and usually one on each of the gear shifters. Either one will do for the rear. For the front you don't get a choice.

I would expect a youtube search for derailleur adjustment to give you all that you could possibly want to know on the subject! Definitely something worth learning to do yourself.
