Light & Motion claim their 180vis is the brightest rear light - is that correct?

    No.

    It probably used to be.

Cycled in this morning with the District 3 on BRIGHT.

My mate cycling behind was wearing a red softshell top and he was acting as a secondary light - he was positively glowing in the pool the D3 threw out.

I spent some time angling it so it lit the bike and the road without dazzling but even so... God it's a bright light.

(got a comment about how bright the Vision 2 is as well - Rob thought it was a car coming towards him when we met up)

OT but I added another headlight last night. I already had one RSP Asteri front on (supposedly 200 lumens) so I put the other on. Turned the room lights off and tested them. When I had them both on flashing, it actually made me feel nauseous - rather like being drunk in a head spinny way. Be interested to see if I can cope with both flashing on the road.

Also added a Smart half watt rear to the 1 watt that was already there (though it turns out that the former needs new batteries...)

    those Asteri's look good

just found a pair of them for £44

Got an Astrum but the bracket broke - so can only use on my training bike (found a bracket that it fitted). Got two Magicshine 818's that are very very bright.

Just a warning to anyone contemplating the flare/ flash lights, i have had 2 silicone brackets tear apart on fitting to the bike. Bit surprising really. The silicone only wraps around the frame and onto the bracket so no sharp bits on which they can tear really. And i do cut my finger nails regularly...
The silicone bands are not cheap to replace either and i may find an alternative replacement, something permanent perhaps to hold the brackets. No complaints about the lights though. Absolutely fab :)

I like them - I think that's about how much I paid last year. Two together is OK up to about 25mph irrc on unlit roads, they are small and neat and the batteries last a good time. And if one runs out, the remaining one is still good enough to see by.

The only real issue on unlit roads is rain drops diffusing the beam.

  • I've just taken delivery of an RSP Astrum ....
    ....

...and tonight I lost it :(

Got home to find the clip still attached to the bracket but the light had snapped off...must have been a bright flashing object laying in the road somewhere behind me for some magpie to pick up.
The plastic casing seem harder (as in feels more brittle) than the Niterider .

    Mmm, seems that was true.

Great light, will I replace it with the same...probably not. Anyone want a spare RSP bracket?

My nite rider cherry bomb rear light snapped off at the seatpost mount when I hit a pothole on Waterloo bridge this evening, FFS does anyone make a bright rear light that doesnt eat batteries can be quickly and easily mounted to any place

I bought a exposure flare from Wiggle but it then turned out to be out of stock until forever.

I've lost to many cateye rears to even count, they seem to wear out the mountings over time and scratch the plastic cases.

Exposure RedEye using the additional single-cell piggyback battery from the rest of the Exposure kit. Yes, it's expensive, but no, it just won't break.

Anyone got any feedback on the Smart Lunar R2?

Can't you put them on the seat post? I have two R1s on my seat post where they are fine (protected by the Crud). I don't think I'd trust a Smart on a seat stay!

I've got an R1 on the seatpost already. I was hoping these R2's would be more waterproof and with one on each stay it would make me look like a moped in the dark.

Edit: and I quote the product description "tough construction which can withstand even the most
    extreme weather conditions."

That's Smart for 'keep it on the seatpost gents'!

Surely you'd look more like a moped with one big light on the seatpost - twin rear lights can only make you look like car that's a long way away!

My RSP has separated itself a couple of times too. Its now got a rubber band around it to hold it together when I go over the bumpy bits.

I had an astrum but the little internal lugs snapped after about a week (hitting a bump I think) and the back half fell off in the road so I took it back.

Also my stupidly large thigh contacted the stick out screw bit on the side of the mount, very wary of wearing a hole in me assos.

    Great light, crap construction.

Also, why wouldn't you want one of the bulbs to flash and the other go steady, not one of the illumination options sadly.

Exposure flash and flare now, spectacular, just about to buy another flash for the front.

From a driver's persepective, the R2 is very good, I passed a rider with one a while ago and was impressed.

i have had a few comments from other cyclists to say that they are pretty bright from behind

on the front i still have my Moon X Power 300 an i have my Chinese 1600 lumen "light sabre" for when it gets pitch black.

As Moon has been mentioned, I'll tip the sealed Moon Shield 60 as a bright, compact and waterproof rear light. £35-45, depending on where you shop. USB-rechargeable on USB, so ideal for plugging into a PC at either end of commute.

I have Blackburn Mars 3.0 on both commuters - very happy with them

    http://www.parker-international.co.uk/5 ... gn=pid5536

I've got a Mars 4 at the back and am now on my 3rd, the other two went back under the lifetime warranty - one simply didn't work and the other died after one super-rainy day

Seriously not impressed, would move over to another light if I didn't have to buy more than one frikin' bracket :(

It's just a hill. Get over it.

I started with a very nice Kona Dr Dew as a commuter / hack-around-town. Now with upgrade-itus, "all" that's left to change is the bars, stem and seatpost. The rest is Race Face and Hope. I "have" to have the lights. It would be rude not to complete the Hope theme.

*Does anyone else think this will win the argument with The Wife. £400 on lights. :? :? :?

I've gone for the 'cheapskate' option of MJ-818 and MJ-872. Probably just as bright. The quality is very good too, though admittedly it's probably not quite as good as Hope.

I've just bought the Smart R2 after looking at lots of decent reviews on Wiggle - so hopefully theyve sorted the water problems out. And half price from Planet X too. Loving the disco mode it seems to have on it. I'll not get any epileptics on my tail. Well not for long.

    Yep.

(and to pre empt the next question :P) While it's still light in the morning I've been using the rear on flash or (constant when foggy), with the front on low power just when I'm in traffic (or all the time when foggy). On the way home I've put the rear on constant mode and the front on either low power or the next one up (plenty to illuminate an unlit country lane) and I've most of the time, when I get home the battery indicator in the switch is blue, which I think is 50%-75% of charge remaining. That's a 50-55 minute commute each way. I've got it down to oragnge once or twice, which is 25%-50% power. But I usually have a spare battery with me anyway.

Used one of these for this years audaxing
Also bought one for Mrs V's Super Galaxy

Mine lasted about 3 months, several events. Then during PBP the bracket sheered off. It just snapped near the light.
Light still works, the on the bike part is still there. But not sure how to fix the bracket.

Mrs Vs didn't last so long. The light fitting bracket is still on the bike. It may well have suffered the same fate but Mrs V didn't notice

Final score, cheap, bright, strong water proof case but bracket not suitable for UK / France roads.
