Llandegla is like Spaghetti Bolongase

Llandegla is like Spag Bol (A response to the endless trail centre versus 'natural' trails threads) .

Hang on, bear with me a few moments, I don’t think I’ve gone completely mad. Llandegla is to mountain biking what Spag Bol is to cooking. For many foodies Spag Bol is where they start, its involved enough to be considered ‘real’ cooking, without being too complex to completely put you off turning on the cooker again. And what’s more, it tastes great.

Many people spend many years in the Spag Bol phase (or chilli, or cottage pie, etc.). After all, why risk ruining expensive food on a more risky recipe when these simple dishes are so great and require so little effort. However, for some, there’s an urge that better may lay out there, they buy a cook book, browse the internet looking for that killer plate. Sure, it may be more effort, there may be a few burnt pastries along the way, not every dish will taste better; but this is outweighed by the possibility of adventure and a more refined taste.

Similarly, many people ride trail centres for years, who can blame them; they’re great, easy and ride really well. But sooner or later they will get the feeling that something great lies beyond the next hill and they will venture out on their first self-guided route. The trails won’t always be better, the facilities will often be worse, but somehow, there is a hidden something that makes it worthwhile. A secret ingredient which makes the dish greater than the sum of its parts.

There’s no getting away from it though, every foodie will admit, there is a time a place for a good spag bol. Whether it’s introducing friend to your passion in a controlled way, or simply when your away from home and don’t need the fuss or have the time to knock out three courses of fine French cuisine; the trail centre will fill a spot and tie over a hunger until the next adventure.

So, when you’re next at Llandegla, just remember; some people will have fancy pans and knives well beyond the task. This doesn’t mean their idiots, they could be a Michelin chef on a night off, and equally they could be the next Jamie Oliver struggling to switch the hob on for the first time. Many will be unaware of the kitchen etiquette and will routinely make faux pas'.

Llandegla is like Spag Bol, Afan a fine Chilli, whilst the a killer route round Ladybower, Jacobs ladder and Kinder Scout is a Beef Wellington.

Which other rides are like what which dishes? Has Spag Bol been the most fundamental dish in getting people involved in cooking in the last 30 years?

haha, shouldn't of picked those wild mushroom for the spag bol I guess. Just a weird thought I had and maybe shouldn't of shared but I do think the analogy works quite well.

  • There's the rub.... we wouldn't generally go to a decent restaurant, pay a lot of money and be happy being presented with a spag bol. We'd expect a bit more from professionals. We expect to get something equal to or better than what we can make ourselves.

likewise with biking, I'd hope that the dedicated, expensive trails that are built by experts would be significantly better than the natural trails found across the country.

    But they're not.

Where are the expensive trails - all the ones I've been to are free?

    Ditto.
It appears that "theGeneralist" is the true spirit of the crudcatcher (vacuous, a bit dim, and narrow minded, with far too much self-belief), trying to rise again through the compost of pussyness that has appeared here recently.
I say we should throw poo at him, and see if he grows into something work keeping as a pet. And maybe feed him some spag bol

Err, so don't ride Llandegla and the like if they upset you so much. Go ride some natural trails.

Surely the more trails (centres and natural) out there that cater for all levels of riding can only be a good thing. Whats not to like.

Personally I think Llandegla is great fun. It is what it is. Yes its like Alton Towers at the weekend, but if I want a bit more peace Ill head off to Penmachno.

Tsk, some people are never happy.

Oh yeah, and its free to ride at Llandegla, just don't take your car!

I have to admit, I enjoy riding anywhere, I don't look at other peoples bikes, and I don't care what other people enjoy.

    Each to their own.

How dull a world would it be if we all liked and did the same thing.

I hate the fact they bring MTBing to the public, I want us to remain a niche market so we don't have to put with the whole load of idiots that make up 70% or more of the human race :P

naw yours wasn't insane... it was just rambling :P
  • Where are the expensive trails - all the ones I've been to are free?

No, they might be free at the point of use, but they most definitely weren't free to produce. They were paid for somehow by someone.
