I've changed tyres at the back from a 2.1 kenda kadre to a 2.2 conti rubber queen......for some reason it feels very squidgy , almost as if the tubes are too small for the tyre... would changing the tube to a bigger size make any difference? or am i just being a wee bit thick?

It's not your tubes... All that happens when you fit a small tube into a big tyre is they get stretched a bit more, can sometimes make them easier to puncture.

Rubber queens have very flexy sidewalls, never met a Kadre though so don't know if that's what's happening there.

Tubes make no difference. Try experimenting with pressures, or as Northwind said, probably just going from a hard to flexible tyre.
