Following on from my Why am I not faster ... post . I seriously want to replace the tyres on my virtually brand new Spesh Sectuer Elite from Spesh All Conditions to - well the one I really want is Veredestien Fortessa Tricomp but would settle for mid range BUT BUT my wife thinks I am mental and have lost capacity replacing unworn tyres

Help any advice on how to persaude her it is a sensible thing to do ????

Postie J - once I persuade her and get the new tyres I shall post the outcomes from my first post beast ride!!

Jesus, if your struggling to get even a new set of tyres past her you really have taken up the wrong sport.

    Your mental...

Tell her your buying the new ones as spares for when they wear out.

You'll need to ride about 2500Km before the rear needs replacing and a bit longer for the front. They are not to bad in my opinion.
  • Spares for when they wear out - like it ... Wonder if I could pass them off as an expensive but interesting way to get Haribo for the kids?

No not wrong sport wrong wife (sorry dear couldn't resist).
  • Ran them this year on recommendation of guy who races.

They are really smooth and you can run them at fairly high pressures. I have them at 100-120psi and they have been great.

I've had no punctures so far this year, unlike with Michelin Pro3 last year. I would keep them or buy more if they got damaged, but not even any small nicks evident.

I would also recommend Continental GP4000s - lots of folk think they are good on here. I've tried all 3 of the above and would go for the Vredesteins again.

The Continental GP 4000 or the GP 4000s are good. Lots of grip in wet but do puncture more in the wet (in the dry as good as any other tyre). Also been running the GP 4 Seasons which handles the muckier stuff a bit better and gives me a chance to run 25's rather than 23's.

Surely you just buy the new ones, stick 'em on and don't tell her. I suspect she wouldn't notice at all.

I have to say that the Spesh tyres are not great (I find them dull and uninspiring) but it might make sense to leave them on until early March and get some use out of them. Swap them in the spring and then keep for next winter/turbo usage.

I really rate the GP4000s tyres, btw, but favour Kyrillions in rubbish weather as they are so much more durable/puncture proof.

Yeah keep the standard tyres for winter and swap to new ones in Spring. Train more and you'll get faster - cheaper and easier than upgrading kit on the bike.

    Dont' tell her !!
I just buy my bike kit, if Mrs C notices then fair enough, but a lot just gets squirrelled away in the garage :D

To be honest though, she doesn't mind........... it's my money I'm wasting !

Tyres to a frame are shoes/belts/handbags to a dress.

    It's a safety issue

    IF she founds out
  • I see no advantage in discussing it - as above if required "it's a safety issue- in the wet those factory tyres could put me under a lorry"
I replaced a folding bike with a road bike and my beloved, having walked past the new bike for 2 months, only realized when I foolishly mentioned it

    'Is that a new bike'?

No, I've just changed the bar tape and saddle.....
I'm sorry you don't believe in miracles
