I have a friend who has started cycling about 10 miles per day, mostly on roads but sometimes in parks on bike tracks so just a little off-road use.

If you had a budget of £750 or so what would you get? He's been looking at a Condor, not sure which one. Would it be worth spending more.

My friend is in his fifties so he probably doesn't need a turbo nutter, something relatively comfortable but with a bit of speed capability.

Sounds like he is in the market for CX bike.

Does he want drops? Evans have the Canondale CAADX6, or something, for £700 as I recall. Tiagra equipped, looks quite nice. Can do off road.

Boardman provide a lot of bike for the money. They do hybrid and CX versions both good for general purpose use.

I have a Boardman Hybrid but I don't like it on stony surfaces like park paths ie Richmond Park where it's great on the roads but not so good on the gravel. Mind you I do have 100psi in my tyres.
  • +1 for a Tricross :

They're really comfortable and adaptable : did a 120 miler down to Wells on the road including belting up Cheddar Gorge and it was as quick as I needed it to be : then a couple of weeks later it was perfect going up the Fosseway bridle paths and over the Ridgeway and on the canal towpaths.

Just swap out some slicks for a some all weathers or Schwalbe marathons and it'll handle pretty much anything.
