Fork and Shock matching

Hope someone can help here. I am looking at building up my first full suspension bike (not my first FS but my first build), and want to know what should I take into consideration when pairing up frames/shock with the front suspension.

For example, would a fork with quite linear damping, suit a frame with more progressive damping? Or vice versa? Or should I choose similar damping characteristics for both front and rear?
