Wheelset to replace Ritchey Pro on Boardman Comp - HALFORDS!

Hi,

First time poster. I have had continual problems with the standard Ritchey pro wheels on the Boardman Comp bike - the spoke nipples and subsequently spokes keep coming loose (this is a known issue).

Halfords have offered to replace the wheelset, but not with Ritcheys - with rgr958 omega black wheelset with shimano 105 hubs.

Is this a fair swap? Are these wheels worse/better than the Ritcheys? I have no idea and concerned it will make bike heavy/affect the ride.

Any advice?

I ran into spoke trouble with my Boardman TC a few times in the early days. After tweaking my wheels on 3 consecutive occasions after rides, I have not had another issue in around 2,000 miles.

Let it be said that my experience with wheel building is pretty much non-existent. Halfords should be responsible for resolving it but realistically, you may not trust them to do a good job. If you're otherwise happy with the current wheels, just take them to a proper bike shop to be trued and re-tensioned.

105 hubs are great, as long as you're happy with maintaining and adjusting conventional cup-and-cone hubs. Don't know about the rims.

^ wot he said. The hubs are excellent. I doubt anyone would lace a rubbish rim to a 105 hub?

Produced by Raleigh in Nottingham apparently!
  • Thanks to everyone for the advise.

Des Weller - what are cup and cone hubs and what are their benefit/drawbacks?

EDIT: Note that a substantial proportion of the quality of a wheel lies in the skill of the builder. Good components can easily be made into a poor wheel.

Yep. They still have a factory/works here. I am led to believe that they still make the team bikes and top end stuff in Nottingham. I'd call 105 hubs reasonably high end.
