Helmet + Hydration Pack

Trying to put a shortlist together as I need a new pisspot... my Giro Hex is now about 4 years old and i've noticed a nice crack appearing!

I want something with a bit more protection, but not overly hot.
And I want a hydration pack that isn't huge, but can carry a full face helmet.

Basically for 2 uses.

1) General XC/Trail duty
2) For when I do ride the Torque on some trails when not on an uplift and come back down the DH track.

Any ideas?

I'm thinking of the Fox Flux for a helmet, anything else to try?

No idea about a hydration pack apart from a Camelbac Consiergie (sp)..

Cheers!

Fox Flux is a great lid, I use one in the heat, old sk8 style piss-pot in the cold though (better protection but crap vents)

HAWG holds everything, pads lid lunch etch but also does not feel out of place empty.

Flux is ace... But the Striker looks like it's better still. Haven't used one yet, probably will once my Flux dies.

The Camelbak Chaos/Havoc/etc series were absolutely superb packs but out of stock most places now. The Consierge etc are the less-good replacements.

I have a sack from Decathalon that I suppose isn't much bigger than a Mule - but it's shaped more like a rucksack. In addition, it has a massive helmet strap that I can get my full face and armour into. I can check what it's called tonight if you're interested in cheap? I've ridden with it for a few years now and there's not a bust stick on it.
  • I've got a MET kaos, and can't fault it at all, the most comfortable one i've ever had. It's worth trying a few on first though as i found some didn't sit right in the shop, spesh s-works felt like it was perched on my head even though it looked fine.

Dakine packs are quite good, i'm just replacing the bladder on mine after 3 years (postie should have been here with it by now!). I've also got a slightly bigger Deuter pack, the race x 12, which i like alot.

No other way? Really? My Giro Hex sat on my noggin perfectly and I never tried one on before hand ;)

Obviously its a gamble, but I wouldn't say theres no other way.

I have been using the same model of Bell for years. Forgot it on Sunday so went into friendly LBS (Pedal and Spoke in Peaslake - good guys free plug) who kindly lent me one, a similar one size fits all Bell, but a different model.
It didn't fit at all, totally different shape inside, looked almost identical outside.
    Try it on first.

  • To all above re: A helmet.
I'm looking for a shortlist so I can go try some

Hyrdration packs i'm none to fussed, just needs to be able to carry a full face and not be too big.

And if you can't? Brilliant advice, as I said you don't have to try one on, its a gamble and you may end up having to return it but to state theres no other way than trying one on first is narrow minded.

Not everyone lives next to an LBS that stocks all ranges. Obviously if you can try it on, do it.
  • protec helmets are light and comfortable and look sick...

  • My suggestions:

Consigliere pack if 2L water is enough for you but Camelbaks The Don or Dakines Nomad will carry all your full face and downhill needs plus 3L of water.

For AM helmet looks with deep rear protection, personally i also like the look of Fox's Flux. POC's Trabec is also a pretty cool looking pisspot/Mtb helmet cross breed. I only find MET helmets fit me so i will never get to wear either.

How about an Urge Endur-o-matic helmet? I've had one since they came into the UK last Christmas and I love it.
