newbie needs advice

hi guys, well I've took the decision to start cycling to commute to work and some off roading, after a week,shortlisted a few bikes and could do with some hints and tips on what to purchase, have roughly a 1000 to spend:

carrera banshee x full suspension
GT zaskar sport
voodoo hoodoo
or found some cube bikes for under a 1000

Voodoo or put a bit more in and get a Trance X

Depends on what you want to use it for, your list is a bit varied.
Mainly commuting with some playing go for a light hardtail.
Short easy commute with lots of playing a more serious HT or FS.
