Some advice please...I have a 5 year old 9sp Deore chainset fitted to my bike

Will this upgrade work;

1/ Remove large ring (44T)

2/ Replace middle ring (32T) with the 36T model of this;
http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Mode ... delID=5699

3/ Install ISCG 05 - Max 37t model of this
http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Mode ... elID=58726

Will I encounter any probs with this? Bit confused with these ISCG standards

Thanks.

    What ISCG tabs does your frame have? ISCG or ISCG05.
    If it's the Rockhopper I don't think it has any.

    Does the crankset have a external BB?

    ?? - no idea. I've never touched anything down there!

    All 'looks' fairly straight forward BB, crank arm, chain rings all connected with allen key bolts

    External BB - tbh I have no idea what that look likes but this looks like a 'normal' enclosed BB - the sort of thing I had on my Ridgeback in 1993!

    Are there tabs welded onto your frame at the bb area?

    I would change the crankset to a slx twin and bash and fit a stinger. (Funds permitting)

    To answer your question, yes it will. The sunline chainguide comes with an ISCG05 adaptor plate which should mount behind your bottom bracket.

    You may need a new front mech though. Most Shimano mechs have a maximum jump of 12t teeth between rings

    Point is do you really need a chain device?
    Just remove the big ring and add a bash.

    Shimano front mechs have a max jump of 14t, I thought. My 24t/38t double setup works fine with a 9 speed deore front mech.

    No, no tabs welded onto frame

    That was my original plan (SLX dual/bash & a stinger) but thought I could do it for a lot less money and use existing BB, crank arms & small ring - which are all fine

    Lost my chain a few times now - not fun at all

    I've removed a couple of links from the chain which seems to help a bit

    I'm aware of what BB is fitted to the bike, as it has a Deore octolink chainset. Octolink bottom brackets do though, have a lip on the driveside cup to stop you inserting it too far.

    Of course, looking again at the proposed chaindevice everyone (even me) has missed the elephant in the corner. The Sunline guide is designed for a single ring

    aha right, well maybe cough up the extra and go back to the original idea - SLX dual chainset although RockmonkeySC just wrote

    "I will be replacing the SLX bash guard though as all the reinforcing ribs are on the inside so the will fill with mud and the only way to clean it out is to remove the bash"

    I presume the BB that comes with that chainset will be an external one?

    Chain just came off again and I ended up in a river! - luckily managed to stay on my feet

    So does that mean I can fit the 'BB Mount' model of this;

    to this;

    You'll still need an external bb, i'd recommend the SLX double bash setup, i've just bought a set and it works well. It will also come with the necessary external bb to mount that chain device

    yes but you will need to change the BB to an E type version of what you have now.

    if you do go for a new external BB and crank set up you will need the BB shell faceing.

    I see. If I've got to replace the BB then probably better just getting an SLX M665 Dual/bash which comes with an external BB.

    Is replacing the BB something I could do with a BB tool & crank extractor (and load of swearing) or do I need a facing tool to put the new one in properly?

    Cheers

    to be a proper job the BB shell needs to be faced so its defo square. if you just want to slap it on and hope for the best thats up to you. im sure your LBS will be able to face the shell for you for cheap if you strip everything down and just give them the frame.

    they may install the BB itself if you ask nicely too.
