Was looking at this today http://www.openkent.org.uk/index.php/bl ... with-ideas and it reminded me of an idea i had a while ago... Wouldn't it be great if:

There was a website/app which, like a price comparison website, harvested all the following information:

BC events
LVRC events
TLI events
Open TT events
Club TT events
Bike shops
Bike friendly cafes

With the facility for people to submit (in some sort of managed way so it doesn't just get full of disparate peoples individual training rides)
Club runs
Chaingangs
Training rides

And stuck it all on a map. Ideal for new cyclists - wanting to find out what's going on and where - or people looking to get into new areas of the sport. Great for cyclists on holiday who might want to hook up with a random club ride. Great for cyclists when they move house.

Loads of this data exists - whether it's already mapped on existing resources like bikeroutetoaster etc - or captured on GPS and/or Smartphones...

Can't say I have the expertise to put this together - but someone on here might know where to start?

  • ...of course - the site/app would all be searchable so you could filter out the information you best wanted - or overlay bits together e.g.: find out if a club run takes in the road race course you are thinking of entering) have a look at the altitude profile for a TT you are riding/compare course to see how hilly/flat they are - see if there's a bike friendly cafe near your local club run route that you don't know about yet...

  • Sounds grand. Wish I could help
  • A while ago I had a problem uploading a photo to the photomap on cyclestreets.net. ( http://www.cyclestreets.net/ ) I sent them a query on Saturday night and there was a clear, helpful reply in my inbox on Sunday morning. They use an user editable open source cycle map - you can already add bits of cycling infrastructure and photographs, etc, to the map, so adding venues and events would be a fairly simple next step. Have a look and drop them a line - I've found that they were very helpful and very cycle-friendly.

(It should be possible, for example, to fix a link in the map to Herne Hill velodrome's list of upcoming events from their website, or even to a google calendar. That would address the problem of keeping things up-to-date.)
