Hi,

i want to replace my current 2300 8 speed crankset as it is getting worn now, can i replace this with a crankset for 9 or 10 speed setup assuming that i change the chain, sorry if this a stupid question but i am unsure as to whether this will work correctly.

Cheers Paul

Are you sure the crankset is getting worn? Usually it's the chain then the cassette that wear first.

You can use a nine speed chain with a ten speed chainring so changing chainrings shouldn't be a problem. You can't use a 9/10 speed chain with an 8 speed cassette though.

Okay, so i need to keep a lookout for an 8 speed crankset then.

Wish i had that sort of money to spend on parts, trying to buy them second hand at the moment to get me up to 9 or 10 speed and see if they would be compatible with my 8 speed setup until i get the full groupset.

A 9 speed crankset / chainrings will work with an 8 speed setup and chain...my winter commuter's 8 speed Sora, 8 speed chain, 9 speed Tiagra crankset, works perfectly.

You certainly should be able to pick up a 9 speed crankset off ebay quite cheap.
My Tiagra crankset was less that £15, very light use and i also got a 9 speed Xenon crankset that looked new..£12 IIRC. I sold the chainrings on ebay for more than i paid for the whole crankset.
