Hi all,

I'm looking to buy this allez on the weekend and wondered if anyone could shed some light as to what model and year it is? From the pictures I can see it has Campag mirage groupset, but that is all I can make out. Oh, and it advertises it's 9 speed all over it...

here are some pictures:

Thanks in advance,

Mike

    Looks like 2005 base-model

    Stock wheels, bars, stem

Only thing is, that would have come with 8sp Sora, so someone has fitted Mirage to it

As they are the stock wheels (which aren't very good and personally first thing I'd upgrade), then how is it running 9sp Campg with Shimano-fit hubs ?

    Looks tidy

got to the same conclusion as you Andy. I It is a strange one, that's for sure. But as you said, it looks tidy. I'm going to buy it based on it riding smoothly - I only intend on it being a commuter/training bike.

I've never heard of the Mirage groupset before(I'm a MTB'er). Is it any good? How does it compare to the shimano groupsets?

And the big question - how much should I be willing to pay for this?

    Cheers

I've got 9 speed Xenon on a 2005 bike and it works well, the mirage is one up from that I think so if its been maintained it should be fine. Take it for a ride and ask the seller about the groupset. Make sure it changes ok under load and if you like it and are happy with the price then go for it!

Thanks Keith. It looks good in the pictures so let's hope its as good in real life.

Anybody want to have a stab at pricing it?

    I'd have a guess at £300 - £350
That's presuming it rides well and is as tidy as the pics suggest. Does it come with the pedals?

I may well be miles out on the price as I'm rubbish at that sort of thing, I'm sure someone who knows what they're on about will have a far more accurate guess!

Counting cogs in pic 3, it looks 9sp.

So I suspect it's running a Shimano-splined-but-Campag-spaced cassette : Ambrosio for instance make them
    - this is 10sp but they (at any rate did...) make them 9sp too

If it is, I'd be tempted to just ring Surosa (decent LBS near where I used to live actually) and check you can still get the 9sp version, for when it wears out.

Shift quality is supposed to be OK but I think they wear a bit quicker than Shimano or Campag cassettes

Alternative will be a new wheel with Campag-hub and cassette when you decide to upgrade the wheels : these are Spesh-branded Formula hubs on Alex rims and whilst they're bearable they're heavy and flexy and the spokes start to go after several thousand miles - I have a pair but now only use on the turbo in Winter

£300-£350 for a 2005 base model Allez is a bit OTT IMO.

Have previously bought 2008 Allez Elite for that sort of money (and that was nearly two years ago as well).

£300 is absolute max and I would suggest somewhere in the £250 region (or less) should be your target price.

    Indeed, looks like 2005.

Was probably only £500ish in 2005. £350 seems very steep.
