Lucky escape...anyone else

Had a panic on the way home from work tonight.

About 2 minutes into ride on a fast (20+mph) A road I subconsciously 'checked' my wedding ring was on, it was. 2 seconds later I heard a ping and saw a shiny thing drop down...

Slammed on the brakes but I had already gone about 20m or more and had no idea where the ring was.

Retraced steps and amazingly ring was sitting in the middle of the pavement and not in the hedge, verge or gutter.

Would have been i)gutted to lose it ii)out of pocket iii)in serious hot water at home. I am sure the other married gents can rearrange those in the correct order.

Think I will take ring off now before riding...that's what you get for a cold wind and dropping a few kg.

Funnily enough, I have thought about that happening a few times on recent rides, like you I would be gutted if I lost it but it wouldn't feel right to take it off for the spin.
  • Since when is 20mph+ fast?
I'm sorry you don't believe in miracles

  • Sounds like your ring might be too big - maybe you should get it reduced in size a bit.

I lost mine in a major cycling calamity - was prising a front light apart with a screwdriver and slipped, stabbing my thump with the blade - it went in easily enough but just failed to break back out of the skin at the end, just under the nail. The ring disappeared when I went for the obligatory tetanus jab, probably in the clinical waste bin when the hand had a good clean up and a wipe down with paper towels - I never did see it again.

FWIW it's worth it is just a symbolic bit of gold. I bought a new one and hardly gave the other a second thought, wife wasn't too put out once there was one in place again.
  • My husband doesn't wear a wedding ring, not even sure he still has it! He actually lost it during our wedding reception but it was found at the hotel the next day.

Sounds like you need to get yours re-sized if it fell off whilst riding.

You could squash it a bit and then later in life if you finger gets fatter again you could squash it back again.

    Thanks helpful comment

20mph+ is too fast when a 20mm metal ring falls off and bounces down the road!!! If it had fallen off at 5mph would have been MUCH less energy involved. Beside which the plus was indicatng that it was greater than 20 but (stupidly) I completely forget to check my exact speed when it came off!

The point of the post wasn't "ooh look at me can't I go fast" but you seemed to miss that. I am more than comfortable with my cycling progress thanks :D

    When it's 30mph? 40mph? 50mph maybe? That's what 20mph+ is after all.

Temprraily lost mine whilst gardening. It was dusk, nearly dark when I went inside and washed my hands - ring awol. Found it almost straight away though by a miracle as it was virtually completely buried in dirt. Ours are a mahcing pair, handmade by a freid - so it would have been a VERY big deal if it had gone missing!

I've had the same problem with my wedding band slipping off and I've started taking it off before cycling. Now I can't remember where I put it and haven't seen it for several days. :?
  • Lucky as mate, with my luck there would be no chance o finding it. I wear long finger gloves and it's a good job I do as my ring is now 2 sizes too big since starting cycling this year. Need to get mine sorted too.

I never wear mine, i've seen/heard of too many fingers being de-gloved in sporting accidents.
