    Because personally I don't mind fixing a puncture at the road side on a nice warm summers day but I'd rather not on a freezing cold morning in January, hence a pair of heavier more puncture resistant tyres for winter riding.

    The more expensive tyres tend to have the best puncture resistance anyway and harder, heavier, longer lasting tyres aren't as grippy or as fast or as enjoyable to ride and as this isn't the commuting section you want to enjoy your cycling and you want more grip in the wet, not less. Anyway i'm using Vitoria Open Paves in the winter and they fit the bill.
