Hi folks

Getting my first proper bike on the cycle to work scheme. Got a 25K round trip commute. Been looking at the Specialized Sirrus and just wondering which model is best? I'm considering the elite and comp, for the faster 28 tyres. Is the Comp worth the extra £200 do you reckon? Main diffs seem to be:

Elite: Shimano Acera / Alivio Derailleurs vs Comp Shimano SRAM
Elite: Alloy Linear Pull brakes vs Comp Tektra
Elite: 3x9 gears Comp: 2x 10 gears.

Any views from the experts much appreciated!

Many Thanks

Guess best thing to do is try both and see. Personally I'm not a big fan of Shimano kit, I have a spare road bike with some SRAM gear on it and it is pretty good.. but SRAM do a range from cheaper to expensive just like Shimano so I guess you need to determine what spec the SRAM gear ont he comp is.

With regard to gears... depends how hilly, depends on how you think you are as a rider. The 3x9 will give you more of a range of gears... so maybe better if you are not so fit, you are 'up and down' in terms of pace or your technique is not so good (or there are hills that you may struggle on).

I would go for the compact (2x10 in your post) over the triple as I find there are not many hills I struggle up with a 34/50 (but then I am dead skinny and fairly light).
  • Cheers Mike, just got the Comp! Really appreciated your help.
