Wind direction

Every time I look at the wind direction for London on BBC weather, it's southwesterly ie good on the way in, not so good on the way home.
Is it like this all year, or have the last few months been odd?

And pretty much the whole of the UK - southwesterlies are the prevailing winds. Down near the coast, you'll find trees growing in the same direction.

All I know is that on my ride in this morning I hit 28.7mph on the long slightly downhill sprint stretch on my ride. Went home for lunch, wind picked up like a b'stard whilst I was at home.
Same stretch back to the office? 24.3. That's on the drops and hammering it BTW.
If the damn wind changes direction between now and 5pm I will be issuing a writ to the bloke in bedsheet and beard. After yesterday's shenanigans trying to race CX my legs will not accept a monster headwind going back up that slope.FCN 5 belt driven fixie for city bits
