Mother and father are to be no more!

Heard on the news that the titles mother and father are to be removed from passports and replaced with...............................parent #1 and parent #2. Why, to accomodate same sex couples.

Now I know we live in a liberal society and really it's not that important on the scale of things but FFS to me this is a step too far.

Christ on a bike, what happens on mothersday/fathersday and the little ones have to decide which one of parent #1 and parent #2 gets a card and which one doesn't.

    What utter b0llocks!

For same sex couples, simply put either farther and farther or mother and mother. Or let them choose, perhaps in same sex couples you could have a male mother/female farther.

And who gets to be parent#1 and who settles to be known as parent#2. This could cause a huge argument in our house.

So for same sex couples why can't their passports just read,

    1) Father and Father
    or
    2) Mother and Mother

I happen to think it's a totally needless change. I did acknowledge in the scale of things it's not really an issue it just seems to be another bit of PC for PC's sake.

Yeah, it's definitely going to affect you adversely. How will you possibly cope?

  • Total non-story. It's passport forms, not passports themselves. And it's an option for same sex parents (who presumably find it rather odd to describe themselves as mother/father when they're both men or women).

The Identity and Passport Service says:
IPS is planning to amend the application form and associated guidance to deal with same-sex parents applying for a passport on behalf of a child.

Currently, the application form provides the relevant boxes of ‘mother’ and ‘father’ to be completed. The new form to be introduced by December 2011 will in addition provide for ‘parent 1′ and ‘parent 2′.

Thank you for giving us FACTS and not a knee jerk reaction..

And why get angry over things you can't change or make no difference to your life.. Life is too short!

    Being pedantic, surely it's Father / step-father or mother/step-mother.

So rather than Parent*1 and Parent*2 it would be Parent and step-parent irrespective of sexes.

What about the times when a woman gets gang banged by a couple of gays who are identical twins and she just can't be sure who is the dad, and who is the step dad?

Why would 2 gays be gang banging a female? Surely not gay then??

Aren't we missing the point? As yet, same-sex couples can't conceive (unless I've missed something) and kids are born from a mother still?

So why the does form still not state mother & father? If the father is unknown then it's unknown. The only rare complication is if the mother has become legally male through an op - but I dont think this is common enough to confuse matters.

    Do I care though?

    Accident?
  • they must be in denial!
  • Woah. Why the knee jerk reaction.

Te forms have to be changed as they are incorrect. There is no point printing separate forms for every possible scenario.

It isn't PC gone mad at all, it is a minor issue that a simple change resolves. It isn't implying you are gay or different sex parents are bad.

How would you resolve the issue any differently?

    adoption?

father and mother in legal terms don't necessarily mean the donor of the biological material and owner of the gestation box that you formed in.

I'm sure the form is asking for the legal guardian of the child not who they'd need to seek out for a tissue match.

but like others have said, total non story. Let people choose whatecer terminology they're comfortable with. not PC, simply good manners.

I think it might be something to do with adoption.
