9/10 Speed Question

Quick question, I've had a read through the FAQ's but want to be 100% before I start fitting bits. Will the following combination of drivetrain work?
9 speed XT shifters
9 speed XT rear mech
9 speed XT cassette
10 speed SLX chainset
10 speed XT front mech
and if it will, will a 9 or 10 speed chain be better?

It will work - the speed of chain should match the front mech for better shifting.0
