Why would a frame make so much difference?

I've just cannibalised my Spesh crossroads and put all the kit except headset and seat post onto a Surly XCheck
The ride is unbelievable in comparison ... does a frame make that much difference ... or is it the crank shaft that was replaced during the transfer from bike to another when my old one broke
Just wondered ... either way I'm happy as larry
