Cowalfest programme 2011

Bike Ride - Benmore – Beginners ride
Time: 10.00 Saturday 8th October
Facilitators: Rob Cooksley & Lindsay Calcraft
Distance/Time: 4 miles / 2 hours
Start/Finish: Benmore car park

In previous years Lindsay has led a ladies ride. This year we’re changing that in a bid to entice more of you onto your bikes! It’s a beginners ride suitable for anyone who wants to go mountain biking, but without the pressure of ‘not being fit enough’, or ‘not being good enough’. No helmet, no ride, other than that just bring you & your bike. And probably some clean clothes, getting muddy is pretty certain!

Bike Ride - Benmore - easy ride
Time: 13.00 Saturday 8th October
Facilitator: Rob Cooksley & Lindsay Calcraft
Distance/Time : 4-5 miles /3-4 hours
Start/Finish: Benmore car park

Following on from the morning's ride, any beginners fancying a bit more riding can have a cuppa in the cafe, then come on another ride, starting again at Benmore. This ride will climb a bit higher and go a bit further, and find some slightly trickier trails, but still a steady pace. All welcome. No helmet, no ride.

Bike Ride - Bheinn Mhor
Time: 10.00 Sunday 9th October
Facilitator: Rob Cooksley and Stewart McNee
Distance/Time: 9 miles/5 hours (mostly up!)
Start/Finish: Benmore Gardens car park

A hard ride, going up the highest peak in Cowal. It's a long climb mixing pedalling with a bit of "hike-a-bike" but the magnificent views of Loch Tarsan, Loch Fyne & the Firth of Clyde, and the surrounding area make it well worth the effort. Oh, and not forgetting the fantastic decent back down!! Ride led by members of Cowal Mountain Bike Club. For any more info email us at: cowalmountainbikeclub@yahoo.co.uk.
Remember no helmet no ride.

Night Bike Ride - Camel's Hump
Time: 19.00 Wednesday 12th October
Facilitator: Rob Cooksley & Cowal Mountain Bike Club
Distance/Time: 5 miles/2 hours
Start/Finish: Glenmorag car park, Dunoon West Bay

If you've not tried night riding before, here's your chance! Places look different in moonlight and views are just amazing at night. It also helps to hone your riding skills. Steady climbs and some excellent single track descents, including the grassy challenge down from the Camels Hump where someone usually ends up taking a soft landing in the ferns! It will be dark so good MTB lights will be necessary, though we might have some sets spare, email us to be sure, cowalmountainbikeclub@yahoo.co.uk .

Bike Ride – Glenbranter with possible uplift

Time: 10.00 Saturday 15th October
Facilitator: Rob Cooksley and Stewart McNee
Distance/Time: 5 miles/1-2 hours
Start/Finish: FCS Glenbranter Outstation car park

Forestry track climbs followed by flowing man-made singletrack downhills. A great introduction to berms and other manmade hazards. Moderate fitness level needed. No helmet, no ride - you know it makes sense!

We are hoping that the nice people at FCS will be able to provide an uplift facility, so you won’t need to ride to the top, we can let the minibus take the strain. That means you can ride the 4 downhill sections over and over again! Yippiee! Please watch the Cowalfest website for further details, or contact cowalmountainbikeclub@yahoo.co.uk. There will probably be a small fee to cover the uplift if it goes ahead but hey, if it means you don’t have to pedal up that b@*%#y hill, its worth every penny! If we don’t get the uplift, tough luck, we’ll be pedalling to the top!

Bike ride – Steep in Strone & Kamakazi in Kilmun – hard ride
Time: 10.00 Sunday 16th October
Facilitator: Rob Cooksley
Distance/Time: 10 miles/4 hours
Start/Finish: Kilmun church car park

Some of the steep, techy trails strung together. Certainly one for the more skilled rider, especially as some of the trails will be pretty wet & slidey too! Lots of climbing, a bit of pushing, but overall a really enjoyable ride. Sadly no café, so bring some food.
