Mapping software reccomendations

Been playing around with a free copy of memorymap for a while but its about 10 years old at least and full of glitches as you would expect. Fancy buying the proper thing but there are several types of software out there Memorymap and Anquet for example. I know there are freebie downloadable maps but I have found them a ballache to use and full of nasties.

Looking for an easy to use interface the ability to print maps off as often as I want and easy to transfer routes to a Garmin gps. Basically I want plug and play and not too pricey to buy 1:25k maps of small areas.

Good timing - this was posted on my club site this morning:

you can now use Bing Maps to view 1:25000 OS Survey maps and if you click on "My Places" you get a free route planner which is really easy to use. You can then export your route as a .gpx for your GPS!

I haven't had chance to play with it yet, but it may do what you are after?

Streetmap is a decent site with OS maps included. If you're looking at proper GIS software then they can be expensive to buy. There are some open source options available but they can also be quite complex and take time to learn.

What file format does your GPS use?

Thanks for the reccomendations guys but I am not after free mapping I want to buy 1/50k maps of Britain and europe plus 1/25k maps of particular areas in britain.

I reccomend viewranger, You can buy certain areas of OS mapping all across europe and at the scale you want.. Easy to plan routes as well on your mobile...
