Having a nice ride to Ogmore yesterday, bike felt a bit strange after 20 miles, my mate noticed my back wheel wobbling so I stopped.

No problem with the wheel - but my frame is buggered AAARRRGHHH.

Seems like the bonding has failed where the chainstay meets the rear dropout on the driveside.

As the bike is just under a year old, I'm hoping for a warranty replacement. sob sob...

Ugh - nasty, sorry to hear about your troubles fella.

    Which bike?

Can you not fix it with some kind of goo based item from your shop....? :-)

  • If it's under a year old, unless there's signs of abuse, you should be fine. Good luck

Hmmm... sympathy duly sent your way for the broken bike, but since you were at the beach and I wasn't, I take it all back out of jealousy!

Unless of course you didn't make it that far, in which case the sympathy remains!

The warranty will have to replace it in my view

I did notice your Freudian slip earlier where you typed "basque" rather than "bask"

I can only assume you were thinking of another thread at the time

I had a bump on the head on Thursday - leave me alone you!!!!

    :-) :-)
  • Hmm : exactly the same thing happened to my pal a few weeks ago. He was on a Merida (apparently they own about 20% of Specialzed) and the rear dropout just snapped.

No warning - no major bumps - and fortunately he was on a relatively flat road after just having come down a 50 mph descent 10 minutes earlier ....

And people wonder why I'm not a fan of carbon.

    You have my sympathies.

Steel breaks too so does alu and all frames have the odd one with a manufacturing defect that gets through testing.

I know steel and aluminium frames can break, I've broken both steel and aluminium frames in the last year, but both were at least 10 years old. Carbon seems to break for no good reason, on occasion, when still relately new .

The aluminium frame had done around 30,000 miles and the steel frame had a bent seat stay and had been ridden like that for a few thousand miles.

I know of relatively new alu frames that have broken too, a sample of one is never a good indicator either way.

I agree, but there seem to be quite a few threads on here featuring broken carbon.
Each to their own, but I think I'll stick to metal for my frames.

Same here - it just went, it felt like the bearing of my bottom bracket had gone as pedalling felt lumpy.

I had been doing about 35mph on the A48 through Cowbridge not long before it went  it's currently down to a single lane on that stretch too.

    Cheers.

If the warranty claim goes through ok, I'll get a repair/replacement.

If I was buying again and had the dosh, I'd seriously look at a Ti frame, I really like the look of Burls.

I'm lusting after Ti too. I read about a company making magnesium frames a while back. They suffered a huge failure rate but this seems to be due to the design. If this got sorted I'd like to go for an extended test ride (about 5 years should do).

I'm guessing you'll be binning the carbon forks that come with 95% of new bikes then.

Obviously the few times that carbon frames break (like any other frame) you'll read about it on here - you don't get thousands of threads on here every day saying 'rode my carbon bike today - no issues'.

If I lived anywhere near London I would have no qualms about letting you take my bike for a short spin to 'convert' :D

    Unlucky, Ben.

    You contacted the retailer?

Yes - waiting on a reply - they've sent me a standard acknowledgment and said they should get back to me within 3 days.
