Planet X merino base layers - anyone else smell of wet sheep

I've bought as few of Planet x's merino stuff recently. especially with the top discounts. Never had an issue with smelly merino (I have loads of Icebreaker, Torm, Tog 24 etc), but the lightweight sleeveless base layers I just got, in 'white - ie cream, sheep colour - absolutely reek of wet animal after a few miles. Febreze doesn't seem to help.

Any other similar experiences?

  • I've got the lightweight Planet X base layers, I've had quite a few soakings this summer on road, mtb, and walking, and I can't say I've noticed this at all.

Although it might explain why I'm followed by dogs everywhere.....
  • No problems with mine either.Wear for at least 2-3 days without washing. Godsend to be honest with you given no shower facilities at work and have to change into a suit etc.

My stinks after a couple of uses, going to get in contact with PX and see what they say - maybe mine came from a Sheep with a BO problem.

Bought the short sleeved merino base they were advertising a couple of weeks back (£19.99 I think - down from £49). This is the one with the zip neck and the "Planet X - ON ONE" logo on the front and rear.

Have used it on several rides as a base layer and can't say I've had any real problems with off odours. Mine is probably not the same one that the OP is complaining about but I have no issues with it.

I have a long sleeve blue base layer and it has been without any problems - smells exactly the same after a few rides as it has when I just recieved it!

(Not sure what the density is)
  • I think your working solo. Got both the 190gm and 120gm base layers and been using both in the last few weeks and not experienced anything like what you've described

Yup, my SS merino baselayer from PX also smells like an old wet dog immediately after a ride. Never had any problems with my Endura BaaBaa LS or DHB LS zip neck, so pretty dissapointed with the PX product TBH :(

Once it dries out it's fine, but it does smell when wet, which I always thought was a particular feature of merino wool, i.e. you can wear for days on end without washing?

Anyone contacted PX to see what they say?

  • Got the same problem.

bought a black one - no smell

white one - almost smells like burning, washed it a few times now and still smells. Going to write to planet x i think and see if there was a bad batch.

Yep, that's it exactly. I'll add my email to PX and see what they say - I'd guess there's a batch of merino that skipped a deodorising process somewhere along the way...

Same experience here. Let us know how it goes.
  • hmmm. me too.
I assumed that it would be ok after washing (but am not sure if I've got round to this yet....) will have to check.
  • Had a very prompt reply from PX who 'aren't aware of anyone with similar problems', or words to that effect - I've linked to this thread for them. They weren't offhand or dismissive, sounded genuinely concerned in fact. Fingers crossed.

It's a really persistent smell, too - it lingers in my nostrils hours after shower/laundry/banishing garments from the room...

  • My white ss Merino base layer came in the post this morning. I haven't worn it yet but it certainly smells - almost like singed hair. I havent worn it yet as its far too warm out!. My blue Merino Jersey from px didn't smell at all when I got it.

Yes, on reflection I think the "singed hair" description is way closer than the one I used about a it smelling "like a wet dog". I'm going email PX too to see what they say...hope they're up for swapping it as I now rarely use it because of this. Meant to say, imine also had this smell straight out of the packet (although much less prominent than when wet, but there all the same).

  • Snap I've got the thin black short sleeve and it smells! More so taking a deep breath face press against it (since reading this thread)!
Singed hair just about describes it with a hint of sheep.

Got the heavy blue one and another but curiously no smell.

In my experience it has to be a classic PX experience, I mean they really try like hell to get you a bargain but a few times things mess-up.

But they are always nice about it!

  • Anyone heard anymore on this?

i e-mailed planet x a couple of days ago but have not had a reply yet

  • The short sleeved lightweight tops seem to be very good for me, just what is need in summer. The heavyweight ones are not such great quality in my opinion. At least compred to the (admittedly much more expensive) ortovox base layers available from facewest.com

You've all been fleeced. I saw this offer and thought "if an offer seems too good to be true it generally is".

Well, except for the other equally cheap PX On-One merino tops I and others also bought which don't smell, do the job brilliantly, and were 'too good to be true' offers as well...

Being cynical won't make you live longer, it'll just make it seem like that...

And hoorah for the tops being great, but the point of the thread is that some are having their greatness quotient reduced by a production fault stench...

  • Have planet-x got back to you about the jersey yet? As I say I haven't worn mine yet, so I don't know how it will smell whilst on and after.
  • I have a white sleeveless Endura BaaBaa merino top, and like you say, when its wet, it absolutely reeks! Sometimes I get off the bike thinking someone has been muck spreading, but its actually me. Smells fine when dry though, and now wash it every couple of uses, but the smell still persists when it gets wet.

Its kind of put me off buying further merino products.

I've just got a short sleeve top and got home after one ride and the smell is rancid, washed it twice and smell wouldn't go, once dried it seems to be ok but something's not right with it.

Anybody heard anything back from planet x ?

i bough the following when they were on offer:

    1 x 120gm black short s
    1 x 120gm black sleveless
    1 x 190gm black long s, half zip
    1 x 250gm black Long s jersey

I have had no problems with smells, and used them quite a bit.

I bought them when they were very cheap and think they are better quality than the endura baba baselayers (I have 2).

I would happily buy some more (preferably next time on offer)

Get Yourself a CRAFT baselayer - One of the best makes around and reasonably cheap
  • In my opinion Nothing. beats a Helly Hansen base layer!

If they are good enough for scaling everest then they are probably good enough for poodling round the Yorkshire dales on a cold winter evening...
