Specialized All Condition Tyres Vs GP4000S

My 2011 Secteur Elite is fitted with Specialized All -Condition 25c tyres. I don't really have anything to compare them against as this is my first road bike. But they do seem a bit "wooden" so i was thinking of buying some Continential GP4000S to replace them.

Before I drop £60 on new tyres, are the 4000's any good? I'm a newbie so will I see much improvement ?

Thanks

Ian

  • I've got GP4000S on one bike - no complaints from me
Carlsberg don't make cycle clothing, but if they did it would probably still not be as good as Assos

superlight, superfast, compound feels very soft which is great for grip and supple ride but seems to pick up more nicks then my Mich. Pro 3's...although I've not punctured them....thats it Ive tempted fait now ! Dont expect them to last as long tho...their race tyres at the end of the day.

    Remember the are 2 models - 4000 and 4000s

Go for the 4000s as far superior in longevity throughout winter and speed.

    See my thread here:

  • I tend to use the Armadilo Specialized All condition pro folding on most of my bikes due to communting and riding in really rubbish weather the 23c are faster than the 25 for sure and getting the folding tyre makes a difference..

Ive used at some point most of the Conti range and do like them but they just never seem to last, as was said lots of little nicks and bits of flint get picked up :(

Im using a set of Gatorskins at the moment on my Sportif bike and they are doing ok but only time will tell I guess :D

I wouldnt drop £60 on a race tyre now as the bad weather is just around the corner not so much for grip but more for puncture protection... So 23c all condition is my recommendation but then tyre are such a personal thing???!!!!!...

The 4000S are very grippy (good in the wet too) and light, but you don't get something for nothing so they trade off durability. Puncture protection is OK, but they don't last for more than a few thousand miles IME.

  • I reckon I'm about 1mph faster on my commute on 23c GP4000s's than I am on 25c Gatorskins. And I think 25c Gators are faster for me than 23c Gators - need to check the data.

So, I'd really recommend the GPs but they are nowhere near as puncture-resistant as Gators so I'm on the Gators now for the wet when the crap is sticking to the tyre surface.

4000s are brilliant for me - they just never p*nct*re.

Running them at 90/95 psi may help too
