Hi all, looking for a little advice. With another freezin winter sooning reacing us
can anyone recommend any jackets that perform great in sub zero temp.
Doesnt need to be waterproof, slim cut would be good.

    Budget? Low temperature performance is often about getting your layering right. Too hot and you get sweaty and chill quickly. not enough and you never get warm.
    Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..

    Use the search. This question has been asked many times, all of the answers you seek will be yielded by the search, go towards the search, do not fear it.

    Carlsberg don't make cycle clothing, but if they did it would probably still not be as good as Assos

    Fabulous, versatile, water resistant and good down to -5C or more with a merino base layer.

  • I use an Assos Evo Intermediate with a base layer. The base layer is removed for late Autumn/early spring. Seems daft buying an expensive jacket just for winter.

    Yeah - staying warm 4 months of the year is overrated....

    Assos Fugujack - but new it's out of budget!

    Why did you snip out the rest of my post, which pointed out that a base layer on a Spring/Autumn jersey can be enough? Christ almighty, what a t*t.

    Ouch - bit over-sensitive. There's no need to quote whole posts (people can read them for themselves) just the bit you're referring too. There's a bunch of "daft" people in this thread, clearly :roll: :wink:

    A jersey and a base layer wouldn't keep me warm below freezing and I run pretty warm. Not only that, but most jerseys have no water-resistant properties nor are they very windproof. Hence the number of "daft" people that buy Airjacks :wink:

  • Must admit, I'd find it a bit chilly with just a base layer and Evo in mid winter - I guess I must be daft buying an Airjack as well :roll:

    Well I'm also completely stupid, I've got one and keep it just for winter. Bought the wife one too and she loves hers. I'm just off to tell her that she's either daft or stupid. :wink:

    Airjack users - does it provide decent rain protection? I'm looking for a winter jacket that's water resistant rather than waterproof, as I get pretty warm and would rather let a little water in than boil. I have been using a Gore Phantom and was going to get a Contest softshell to replace it, but this looks tempting...

    I'd say it was similar to the Phantom for rain protection - but it's a better road fit. For all but the heaviest downpours, I've found my great. But then I'm daft :wink:

    What's worked well for me for a few years is:
    When it's chilly then normal baselayer + Gore Phantom
    When it's cold then thermal baselayer + Gore Phantom
    When it's really cold then thermal baselayer + Endura Stealth

    The Endura Stealth is waterproof but doesn't breathe very well (not as good as the Phantom but it's not boil-in-the-bag plastic jacket bad either). When it's really cold you just need to open the zip anyway to quickly cool down. Only thing I found was a couple of night rides when it was really cold that my kidney area would start to go numb, didn't really bother me much but just in case it was causing any harm I bought a Gore kidney warmer to which works pretty well.

    chilly = base layer(s) & Lusso Jura
    cold = base layer(s) & Lusso Windtex

    Buy both jackets for less than half the price of an Assos 851 - why pay more..?

    of course - nothing wrong with that. Choice is good, which is why I suggested some cheaper alternatives...

    Campagnolo Raytech Thermal TXN jacket. Toastie warm, usually just wear a base layer underneath.

    About £100 from Wiggle.

    Is it obligatory to wear daft glasses and puff your chest out when wearing it?
