A Lancaster bomber did a low level fly past over where I live this afternoon, Christ on a bike I could almost see the rivets in its undercarriage it was so low.
Hairs on the back of the neck and arms were standing on end, absolutely fanbloodytastic.
And this being the town of Eric Coates' birth aswell.

There is only one left flying in the UK, the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight based at RAF Coningsby.Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..0

Brilliant! They do have a lot of character the old planes.
I was out standing around in the country whilst my daughter was horse riding last year and was treated to a low fly-by of one Lancaster bomber with an escort of a Hurricane and Spitfire. Then they all circled round qand came back. I had that same tingling feeling (and rather glad that I wasn't jerry 70 years ago ).0 -
Was driving home past Manston the other week and it was taking off - people were opening their windows to hear the roar of the Rolls Royce engines - grand0

I love old planes.
One thing I want to own before I die is a real original wooden propeller from a old aircraft, a Spifire or even a Sopworth Camel.
There's a Sopworth Camel prop on eBay at the mo, but it's over £2500!! The misses would kill me.0 -

Got the price wrong, but still no chance.0 -
Just say it is for the bike...usually works for me0

Very different sight but early this morning I rode past a field with what must have been a couple of thousand Canada geese - yes thousand. I spooked them and they literally all took off. The noise and sight of a goose filled sky was amazing, I stopped and watched for a good 5 mins. One of those special days!Giant TCR Composite (race), Giant TCR (summer commute) & Giant Revel for winter commute. Ironman0

A couple of months ago I was out for an MTB ride with a mate when behind us we heard an almighty roar like a Space Rocket taking off. We turned to see a giant camouflage triangle heading up into the sky, it flew right over the top of us. It was the Avro Vulcan departing RNAS Yeovilton aftet the air day. I'd seen it as a child at Farnborough but forgotten just how huge and noisey it is.
Some years ago when I was in the Army my wife and I were at 'Proms in the Park' at RAF Bentley Priory. We were treated to a low level aerobatics display by a Spitfire, whilst the Band of the Royal Marines played the The Spitfire Prelude and Fugue, that was one of those hairs on the back of your neck experiences!0 -
i remember standing on top of adam on tryfan and a hercules flying just below me through the ogwen valley - i could see the pilot through his screen - awesome
how do they fly so slow??i need more bikes0 -
My primary school was pretty much at the end of the runway at Biggin Hill. I remember all the old planes flying in for the ai rshows. The Vulcan was my favourite (not that it was an old plane at the time), your lungs would vibrate as it took off and a dark haze of fumes would descend on the school.0

I always get chinooks and apaches, flyng north east, south west and vice versa.
God knows where they are based, the apaches make a racket though i tell thee0 -

Search Mach Loop on youtube for more clips where you look down onto/into flying aircraft.I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.0 -
Frequently get helicopters and aircraft of all sorts down here over Salisbury plain though last week we had the red arrows flighting low, now you dont see that often ..ish
Although this is a pic of a spitfire flown by LIT mum (commuting)
Some snaps from music in the air a few years ago

Not a vintage plane but oh my days seeing the Antonov 225 take off from East MIdlands must rank pretty highly. To make things a little more surreal, I was at Download Festival (Donington Park) at the time watching Def Leppard. The only disability in life is a poor attitude.0

That Lancaster would have been this one.
It went over me earlyer in the year at Chatsworth House.....most unexpected!

I still think the Antonov needs more turbines...

Yep, if you look closely just under where the bomb aimer lies you can see a dodgy rivet head. Lovely aircraft. 8)Tail end Charlie

We had a cafe stop near Lincoln Cathedral on a ride this week, just sat down and heard the roar. Looked up to see the Lancaster fly over the cathedral, made the hairs stand on the back of my neck, an awesome sight!dyslexia rules KO0

Me and my girlfriend went to the British Superbike round at Cadwell Park last month and inbetween the races they had the Lancaster Bomber doing a couple of overhead passes in a battle of britain display, really impressive.2019 Ribble CGR SL

Don't forget that the Shackleton was still flying as an AEW aircraft until the early 90s, basically just a modernised Lancaster. Used to see them regularly over Aberdeen when I was a student there.http://www.strathspey.co.uk - Quality Binoculars at a Sensible Price.

I remember back in the early 80's being in a sugarbeet field near Mildenhall when the ground started to shake. Few seconds later a Lockheed Blackbird came roaring over the trees in a very steep climb. That was quite jaw-dropping.
East Anglia in those days was pretty interesting. The U2 spyplanes still flew from Alconbury, A10 tankbusters would routinely fly round in pairs practicing low level manouvres, and the F111's flew from Lakenheath to bomb Tripoli. And the Vulcan aws a regular Duxford visitor0 -
Two years ago the local Legion got the money together for a memorial to three spitfires that crashed on the Ochils behind my village during the war from the Edinburgh Squadron. On the day of the unveiling service there was a flypast of a Lancaster, Spitfire and a Hurricane. About 60 people, a whole bunch of local cadets and a lone piper played and as the spitfire came round alone for a 3rd circuit to signify the only pilot to survive there was hardly a dry eye, amazing some 65 years on that people still felt it. The roar of the Spitfire's Merlin at full chat is frankly awesome.
Amazingly the pilot that survived, dragged himself nearly 3 miles down the hill to be found by a sheepdog in the depths of winter, he had 2 broken legs.0 -

I can agree with that. I grew up in Lincolnshire in the 80s not far from RAF Whittering. I remember it seemed like any sunny day the Harriers would be flying over at rooftop level. Another time my dad took me to where the Vulcans were based (can't remember where now) and seeing them practice 'scrambling' was an awesome sight and sound. And will never forget the day cycling out in the fens with a mate, looked up and an A10 was flying towards us following the route of the road. It was so low me and my mate jumped off our bikes and lay down. Swear to God, if I had jumped up could have touched it. The pilot must have pissed himself laughing at us!
My best friend growing up, his dad was in the RAF based at Whittering. Some Saturdays he had to go into work, he'd take me and my mate and we'd sit in the Harriers in the hanger pretending to dogfight.. And when 1 Squadron celebrated it's birthday, 75 yrs I think, they had a private airshow by invite only. Sat in a F16, F15, and they had the Battle of Britain memorial flight so sat in a Spitfire and Lancaster. Still one of the best days of my life!0 -
I got the chance to see a live fire excercise at Cape Wrath in the very north west of Scotland. We were on the east of the bay and the range is on the west.
We had 105 guns and mortars firing from around us and there were 6 or so Tornados dropping munitions on the range.
To leave the area they had to show their belly to the control tower and every now and then there was a shout of "JET" and one would come hurtling straight at us at below cliff height then pull at the last minute and bank over the tower; maybe 60ft up. It was an amazing sight and SO noisey.0 -
Is a 105 gun better than a Veloce one or does it come down to personal preferrence?0
