Small metal plates that came with Mavic Pulse shoes

Hi - noob question.
Just got my first set of clipless pedals and shoes (Time Atac Alium and Mavic Pulse).
All seems clear - but with the shoes came two metal plates/shims that would appear to go between the show and the cleats (they're about under an inch square with two parallel slots).
Do I have to use these? Are they optional spacers for different makes of pedal? I can't find any documentation on it.
