I am looking for a commuter for a 10 mile round trip to work everyday, this is all its going to be used for as I have a hard tail for messing around on the weekend. I have found these two, I know halfords is not really the best place to buy i'm just using it for reseach really. Just wanted to know if it is really worth the extra £80 to go for the more expensive one.
(I do no they are different sizes)

The subway is a good cheap and solid commuter, they will take a lot of abuse, however for 10 miles you may want something a little more responsive lke the Gryphon http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stor ... yId_165534

Nothing wrong with buying from Halfords as long as you understand the issues you MAY get at SOME stores.

  • thanks mate didnt really want to spend £300 really let alone more as it is just 5 miles to work and 5 miles back, do you think its worth the extra for the £299 model?

Judging by the state of my MTB*, you'll be fine with the cheaper version.

*24 gears reduced to one due to cables seizing, seat falling apart, front mech seized, which can easily do 5 miles.
    FCN 2-4.

    "Exactly."
  • Can anyone think of any alternatives around the £200-£300 mark?

    Yes.

    Buy second hand.

Seriously for that budget you'll get five times the bike.

You're at a pricepoint - the quality jump between three hundred and six hundred is enormous and three hundred will get you a lightly used six hundred pound bike easily.

CAADX 105 beastie for bumpy bits
    Litespeed L3 for Strava bits

  • thats good advice any particular £600 models i should be looking for second hand?

But if you could stretch your budget to £600 for a secondhand however....

  • I happily do a hilly 24 mile daily commute on rigid mtb very similar to the Carrera Subway.

That'll be fine for 10 miles.

But if you're spending £600 for 2nd hand, maybe you should be thinking about a £600 new bike. Even if you only use it once, that works out at £60/mile. Cheap!

Seriously, if you are thinking 2nd hand, how about this? The seller has dropped the price by £100 too...

Go and stand in the corner, you.

High pressure inner tubes (Inflate to 120psi) for less ground contact and more speed.

Kinda makes sense though, doesn't it? A high pressure tube means the tyre deforms less and therefore less ground contact!
