    For drops or jumps then there is no choice - it has to be back. For singletrack if there are no jumps or general XC then you may be able to put it on the bike - and if you can you should (IMO).

    Easiest way to carry extra weight is to put it as near as possible to the center of balance.
    Center of balance of you and your bike is somewhere in your upper body.
