Just to advise that Aldi have a cycling promotion on the 29th September. Lots of goodies at low prices. Check the website for local store availability.

The rain jackets are really only light shower proof - but they can be handy to keep off the cold.

Re the shoes. I use the road style shoes everyday on my commute. They are actually looking far tidier after a higher mileage than my Northwave shoes though black and silver vs white and black explains some of that. So, aside from looking virtually new after a good 3000 miles, the left one does squeak a bit when I put the power down but otherwise all good.

However, much more importantly today, I passed a small group of schoolboys before stopping at a red. I heard one say "Look, he's got leather shoes that clip in" in a slightly awestruck voice! So there you go - credibility among the 12 year old age group! Get some Aldi shoes now!

Rules me out then, wee lad here. Pity was thinking of picking up a set for commuting too
  • They also mention bike stands for £30, I assume they are work stands. If they are anything like the feted lidl workstands which I never managed to get hold of they will be a good purchase.
  • I'll be down there first thing.

I want those Hedgehogs and Lucie Lizards before they sell out.
  • How do you check if your local store has these offers?

  • Think I will be getting the water bottle with cage as had my last one stolen!

Seriously - what type of skank would even want to steal a used water bottle. And it wasn't even a fancy aluminium one like Aldi are doing - but a chewed up basic plastic one - albeit a decent make.

Will also be getting the overshoes as seems to be the best price I have seen by a long way.

I have the gloves which are pretty good for the price. Although I am sure either Aldi or Lidl were doing waterproof ones a couple of weeks ago - which would be better.

I also have the waterproof trousers which are good for the money. I bought a size up from my normal size so I could wear jeans under them.

Jeez - do you get hot as hell in them - although they do the job.

I'd avoid the jacket though. I reccommend Rockport XCS jackets. From my experience they completely repel any water. I used to have one that I picked up for £30 from M&M direct. It was an amazing jacket. Come in soaked - hang it up and 30 minutes later it was fully dry.

Unfortunately I sold that as I was getting a bit porky. Then picked up a Helly Hansen jacket for about the same price, with "Hellytech". It's OK but no where near as water repellent.

    HTH - thanks OP

Did you also notice they've also got genuine London 2012 merchandise at half the RRP? Ok, it's all tat, but I'm keeping an eye out in case they start doing the Scalextric velodrome sets at half price at some point!

The winter cycling gloves are great value at £5 - used some last year. But, you may want to pick off the large "Biking" motif...

Had a quick look when I was in buying grapes and bananas. The cycling stuff I saw looked like ill-fitting rubbish TBH. The base-layers maybe ok, but the rest looked like a waste of money to me. You can get much better stuff for not a lot more if you look around on the web for sale items.

the compression base layers are really good - I had a couple of the new long sleeve ones today, but I've been using a couple of the short sleeve base layers for about two years now and I reckon they're as good as anything else available (probably better, if you add price/VFM into the equation)....

Haven't tried any of the other stuff, so can't comment...

+1 for the baselayers, have been using them for the last couple of years, best bag of pennies i ever spent!
  • The merino top is great, nice and subtle and feels so much nicer than lycra. Also nabbed a pair of the lace/velcro shoes, seem decent for the price.

The base layers are the only things I am going to go in for
  • Plenty to be had at the Swanley shop. Couldn't find any overshoes but still ended up leaving £63 quid lighter. Although £1 did go on some crinkle cut chips which I am not looking forward to eating later on.

Came away with the winter lycra trousers and the light set (for my hybrid)

I had a look at the winter jacket but it seemed very poor quality so gave it a miss. Might go back tomorrow for the base layers.

2 x cycle lycra tousers with bib [£15 each]
    2 x gloves [£5 pair]

All felt really good, fitted well. Maybe the proof is in the wear but initial feelings are I like them.

As in fish and chips, they are in the oven now and I am fully expecting that lashings of salt and vinegar will not mask the cardboard flavour :(
