Marin Rocky Ridge - Reducing travel

I have a rocky ridge 2010 frame. Original forks were 140mm. Im looking to build it into a lighter xc bike, is it likely to ruin the handling if i use 100 or 120mm fork? I have a much older bobcat trail frame I could use but much prefer the look of the rocky ridge!
