Cateye Strada Wireless problem

Last week the display on my Cateye Strada wireless went blank and stayed that way whether mounted on the bike or detached. Suspecting the battery, even though it is nearly new (as is the computer), I changed it for a new one - still blank.

I took the battery out and left the computer disassembled for 48 hrs then reassembled it. Now the screen is a mass of data showing all the symbols simultaneously with all the numerals at 8. It doesn't matter what buttons I press or how carefully I install the battery, I cannot get beyond this screen regardless of what buttons I press. I have cleaned all the contacts, and assembled everything correctly, then left it another 48hrs but still no change.

Any advice would be appreciated.

  • Does it have a reset button ? Might be underneath and inset so you need something pointy to push it.

Since you say it is new I would take it back to where you bought it. It sounds faulty to me.

EDIT: Good idea about trying the reset button (it is underneath the Strada wireless models and pressed using a pointy thing). If no joy then swapsies.

Yes, have reset it according to instructions. Just get every symbol showing at once.

I had a problem once with a Cateye Micro Wireless. The AC (All Clear, I think) button is deliberately very small and needs something very fine to push it. If you push it to far in, though, it can lodge inside the body of the computer and not pop back out again, which really screws things up. Worth a look.

Thanks for your reply. The all clear button is functioning normally but unfortunately does nothing to change the display.
  • throw it out and buy a decent computer that actually works had three of them previous to my garmin and all broke in the first 1500miles

The Cateye is a dream compared to Sigma, although the magnet has to be within a couple of mm to function.
  • There is a chance that the new battery is no good. Worth trying another. Another thing worth trying (based on this morning's experience) is to mount it and spin the wheels. This morning I accidentally knocked my cateye off and it bounced along the road. When I picked it up only the bottom half of the speed numbers were showing. When I got up to 20mph they started to work properly.

Have tried it out fitted on the bike. It's the same story - all the symbols display simultaneously and stay that way whether moving or stationary.

Oh, and both the batteries I've tried work perfectly in my other Cateye computer.
  • Sounds like it is working in a 'non operational mode' i.e. bust.
