I think my forks need serviced, they're getting on for two years old and have the only thing I've done with them is wash them and adjust the air pressure in them as and when needed.

Is it difficult to service them?
Are there any specialist tools required?

Full service guide is available on RS. This doesn't include replacement of bushings - that does require a specialist tool. But the rest are normal tools (need a circlip plier).
  • I've just downloaded and read through the manual and it all looks pretty straight forward.

Where's the best place to get service kits from?
  • it's easy to do, there are official sram videos on youtube too

Theres a guy on ebay evilhomersimpson who sells all the washers and O rings as a complete kit for £8. I have used this kit and its really easy as it comes with easy to follow instructions. All you need is the correct Wt oil and some SRAM red rum and this kit. Took about an hour to service!

Perfect, looks like I can get them serviced and sorted for about £15 all in then :D
  • I've just noticed in the service manual that I need 123ml of 5W fork oil for the upper tube and only 5ml of 15W for the lower leg.

Can I use either 15W or 5W in both the upper and lower to save me form having to buy 500ml of oil when I only need 5ml of it?

Also regarding the Redrum, is one of the 10cc tubes enough to do a set of forks?

I used the correct weight oil as using the wrong oil will mess up the way the fork feels. You will need to add 5ml to the upper and lower (lefthand) air chambers and 123ml to the top of the right leg (damper cartridge).

When you rebuild make sure you add the right amount or more, its better to have to much than to little.

not strictly true, I used 5wt oil all over, it just meant I had to run slightly different pressures to get the same feel

I'm planning on removing the travel spacer on my Reba SL's in the near future and giving them a serivce at the same time which at the very least will mean replacing the oil (£30ish) but will it be necessary to replace the dust/oil seals (£20 on fleabay) and the o rings (£8.75 on fleabay)?

I bought them second hand a few months ago and I think they are '08 or '09. I've no idea if they've ever been service but they're not leaking oil or air and do seem to be using all their travel although they don't feel as plush as my brothers Talas forks which all I've got to compare them to.

Possibly not the dust seals, but worth changing the o rings as these wear quickest.

Oil should be much cheaper - try fully synthetic motorbike fork oil. Saying that, this is cheap enough:

If you want a small pot of 15wt for the lube, PM me.

Thanks Super, I'll save myself 20 quid and just get the o rings.

After a bit a reading I believe Red Line suspension fluid is the best stuff which comes to £29 with postage (for damping & for lube) which is more than I had in mind. I might have a look at alternative oils that are close to the correct cSt and see what I can get that's cheaper. Thanks for the offer of the 15wt for lube, I'll let you know via PM if I'll take you up on it :D

It's all similar stuff tbh! Well except the viscosities can vary from listed, so pays to research
  • I use Yamaha fork oil because that's what my local m/cycle shop sells, £5 for 500ml of 5wt last week. I've had my 1 litre bottle of 15wt for ages as you don't use so much of that, I don't remember what I paid for it.

If it's good enough for a 150mph motorbike I figure it's ok for my forks.

Are you the same evilhomersimpson that sells the o-rings on ebay? How about a Bike Radar member discount? ;)

I wouldn't bother with MTB specific fork oil because it's just rebranded motorbike suspension fluid with the Red Line and Silkolene Pro RSF suspension fluids being the recommended brands. Rock Shox fork oil is just rebranded Maxima 85-150 which is 15.9 cSt so Red Line Light is just over this and Silkolene Pro RSF 2.5wt is just under so I'll use one of these depending which is cheaper.

Also reading a few sources it seems that the oil you use for lubing the air side and lowers doesn't need to be suspension fluid and you may even be better using motor/engine oil as it sticks to metal parts better. Obviously you wouldn't use it in the damper but it does make sense it would be ok to use as a lube so I'll give it a go as I have a huge tub of that already.

Also also I've read that Enduro fork seals are a big improvement over stock seals and they are £22ish delivered from the US so pretty much the same price as you can get here off ebay. I'm still not sure I'll replace them at this service but does anyone have any experience with the Enduro seals?
