Adjustable stem

Having bought a new summer bike this year, after a bike fit at Paul Hewitt's, I now find that my winter bike position is really uncomfortable - it is very much more aggressive (and gives me some lower back pain). I would like to adjust my position to be more in line with the summer bike position and I am looking at buying a shorter stem, but have no room for any more spacers to raise my position so am considering one of the adjustable stems, such as Ritchey produce, and wondered if anyone has any experience of these and how well they work.

Thanks

Paul

  • got one on a hybrid, works fine, allows me and the mrs to use the bike with a quick adjustment

only problem would be the flak you would get if you posted pics on here. a small price to pay

If you want to change the position permanently I'd just get a normal stem with more rise, OK it won't look great but nor do adjustable stems and you won't have the added weight or potential movement to worry about. I did use to run a Look adjustable stem on a road bike (and it worked very well) but that was so I could drop the front-end for weekly TT's (and stick tri-bars on) but it sounds to me like you want to keep it in the new position.

Is your current stem already flipped so it's angled upwards? If not, do that first. (Mine is, for the reasons you describe)

Otherwise can you stand the 2 bikes side by side to see what angle / length stem you'd need to get the bars in the same position?
